Summary

When French financier Edgar Bowen drowns in a bowl of soup, his former girlfriend, American Rachel Levis, is alarmed by the unnatural death. Who dies eating a nice vichyssoise?

But when she overhears a mourner at his funeral describing the circumstances of his death, something sounds even stranger: A bottle of rosé was on the dining table when he died. The only problem: Edgar loathed rosé. If he wasn’t drinking it, who was? After the police rule the death accidental, Rachel knows it’s up to her and her best friend Magda to investigate.

As the two Americans immerse themselves in Edgar’s upper-class world, the list of suspects grows: Could it have been his son, who inherited his money and lavish apartment? His icy ex-wife? His greedy new girlfriend? His impoverished personal assistant? But when the suspects start dropping like flies, Rachel and Magda realize the murderer is tying up loose ends.

It’ll be up to two amateur sleuths to solve their first case before the murderer decides they’re next....

Good fun with a likeable pair of women up front. Slightly gutted Jessica Fletcher didn’t get a mention but Monk did!

I really liked this story and it was included in my subscription so even better! I have one very small point that kept annoying me. The money! The idea that 7500 euros was a huge amount of money. at the reading of the will everyone thinks this is a huge amount (20k and 5k are also seen as massive amounts). Then the fact a personal assistant would make 3k a month was huge, so huge man who lives in paris and is in banking is impressed. Now for very normal people those ARE large amounts of money BUT a man that owns a law firm in Paris and has just left his apartment with no mortgage in the 1st arrondissement to his son? Thats money! Thats millions. I had to see if the book was written in the 70's but nope it says Euros so cant be that old! it was 2018! I wouldnt scoff at any money but 7.5k in this situation just seemed poorly chosen. I seem like a party pooper here as it was great but it did bother me!

pleasantly surprised
