About this listen

The unrivalled Albert Campion returns to solve another shocking murder - classic crime fiction at its very best. J.S. Lafcadio, the painter, is dead. He wanted lasting fame and he left instructions to his wife for one painting to be exhibited every year after his death. Eight years later in Little Venice, a group of friends and family gather to view the painting. They are treated instead to a murder....

A very good Campion story and superbly read by Francis Matthews. The characterisations were spot on.

The narration of Francis Matthews is stunningly perfect. Matthews was a much underrated actor, not least because he was Cary Grant's cousin! His every voice in the book gives you a clear sense of each character, and every character is fantastically Margery Allingham's. l adore this great author who didn't receive her proper place or dues while alive. Do yourself a favour by introducing yourself to a truly great detective novelist of the Golden Era of crime fiction.

It's Allingham!

This has many unusual sides to the mystery, madness or mental illness being a strange one. Read brilliantly again by Francis Matthews.

Francis Matthews is possibly the best narrator I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. It helped that the book was a brilliant story. A thoroughly excellent listen!

Brilliant Narrator!

Margery Allingham created an unusual amateur sleuth in Campion. He moves in a society we no longer have and it is a delight to read about it. The crimes he solves are intriguing and in this case peopled by eccentrics which adds a touch of humour.
