About this listen

In this brutally honest and gripping novel, Richard Aldington examines the shattered illusions of war and the collapse of heroism.

Through the story of George Winterbourne, a young soldier disillusioned by the horrors of World War I, The Death of a Hero offers a raw and unflinching look at the realities of combat and the emotional scars it leaves behind. With vivid prose and an unrelenting perspective, Aldington challenges the myths of heroism and the price of sacrifice.

This is literally the best book that I have ever read, a brilliant description of the experience of soldiers in the First World War and a biting satire of the society that made such slaughter possible. Sadly, the version that I heard was abridged (hence the four stars), meaning that certain words and phrases had been censored, as per the original publication. Hopefully the unabridged Corona Books version will become available in due course. Definitely worth listening to, even in this imperfect version.

A magnificent book that deserves to be read widely
