About this listen

Death of a Hollow Man is the second instalment in the Midsomer Murders series, featuring an exclusive foreword by John Nettles (ITV’s DCI Tom Barnaby).

Backstage nerves are fraying, and revenge is on its way. As Causton Amateur Dramatic Society prepares for the opening night of Amadeus, in the wings Esslyn Carmichael suspects his wife is having an affair with the leading man. And where better to settle scores than the stage?

Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby expects an evening of entertainment, attending only to show support for his wife. But when someone turns Esslyn’s final grand gesture into a gruesome coup de theatre, Barnaby’s investigation suddenly begins.

Excellent stories and characters in this mystery. I am also a fan of Charles Paris mysteries and this one was every bit as superb, and even funny at times, but also exploring different levels of relationships, a lot of drama of course. I could not stop listening and following the different stories, loved it!

On my second audio of these midsomer books , I plan to listen to them all. Previously enjoyed all the Caroline Graham books over the years. Narration brilliant and story superb. Unfortunately not all the books appear to be in audio!

If you’re lucky enough to possess a brain and a bit of concentration this is remarkable. The missing performance star is for the narration in the first part - rather flat but the wit of the contents is terrific. If you can imagine Agatha Christie via Barbara Pym and brought up to the end of 1980s then this pays off in shrewd and amusing characters. Once there is more dialogue the narrator is excellent. I have finished this in a couple of sittings and have laughed and smirked enthusiastically. It’s also a great murder mystery with Graham as cunning in plotting as the Golden age writers. If you just want a simple gore fest it isn’t for you but for everyone bored by endless blood and brutality it’s a great listen.

Fantastic

I really enjoyed gaining an incite into the authors view of the characters, and their back stories.
The reading was very good, and the storyline fascinating. I shall definitely be listening to more of this authors work.
