About this listen

This is the first monographic English-language biography of an important 19th century figure in Russian History, General Count Mikhail Tarielovich Loris-Melikov (1824-1888). He was an Armenian who was ennobled for his outstanding military service in the army of the Russian Empire through more than 150 battles in the Caucasus, Crimea, and Turkey, becoming in the years 1880-1881 Russian Tsar Alexander II's Minister of the Interior and charged with preventing the Tsar's assassination by terrorists of the People's Will party through clever police action and by proposing conciliative government reforms. Here we see his life-long efforts on behalf of the culturally diverse citizens of the Russian Empire in the 19th century.
