About this listen
A Common-Sense Guide to Living Rich….Instead of Dying Rich
Imagine if by the time you died, you did everything you were told to. You worked hard, saved your money, and looked forward to financial freedom when you retired.
The only thing you wasted along the way was…your life.
Die with Zero presents a startling new and provocative philosophy as well as practical guide on how to get the most out of your money—and out of your life. It’s intended for those who place lifelong memorable experiences far ahead of simply making and accumulating money for one’s so-called Golden Years.
In short, Bill Perkins wants to rescue you from over-saving and under-living. Regardless of your age, Die with Zero will teach you Perkins’ plan for optimizing your life, stage by stage, so you’re fully engaged and enjoying what you’ve worked and saved for.
You’ll discover how to maximize your lifetime memorable moments with “experience bucketing,” how to convert your earnings into priceless memories by following your “net worth curve,” and find out how to navigate whether to invest in, or delay, a meaningful adventure based on your “spend curve” and “personal interest rate.”
Using his own life experiences as well as the inspiring stories and cautionary tales of others—and drawing on eye-opening insights about time, money, and happiness from psychological science and behavioral finance —Perkins makes a timely, convincing, and contrarian case for living large.
Financial planning - unrealistic:
Potentially unrealistic. I've invested in the stock market "through advisors" and bank accounts etc and the assumption that you can work on a return of 3% + inflation has not been true for me . Factor in Brexit, COVID and now the Ukrainian crisis and other tensions in the global economy and it's been bad times for investments. there in current inflation rates and compare those with interest rates available, and the real difference between the two is far worse that it every was when we were being offered a pittance in interest rate returns. And while yes, investments are "long term' at my age in life, "long term' is not likely to be relevant. So the financial planning side of this book for me and what to expect in terms of returns was weak/unrealistic.
Sobering:
Far more helpful were key points I took away about health and the impact this will have on you being able to "physically do " the things you want to do. So set your order and timescale for doing things based on your anticipated health.
Thought provoking:
Wills and leaving things to relatives and children was another fascinating area. Why wait until you die to leave an inheritance, by which time those you leave it to will either be too old themselves or not in need of it to the same extent if you'd given it then much earlier in their lives when a help starting out would have really been beneficial for them. so the author is keen to stress, Die with Zero isn't about being selfish and using up your wealth yourself, it's about maximising your quality of your life and those you care about at the right time
Scary:
And then lastly there is the question of facing up to your own mortality. Here's a dilemma for you. If you had an envelope and inside that envelope was the exact date you would die, and there was Zero you could do about it, would you open the envelope? If the answer is no, then this book is not for you because this book forces you to open that envelope and face up to the reality that we all die and to die with zero you need to have a pretty good idea of when that will be.
Conclusion:
My best advice, get the book. it's a cold reality check. Don't die with regrets.

It's aimed more towards those people that save all their money, so if you don't have much disposable income, or already spend everything you earn, then it's probably not for you.
But if you're a high earner, and save far more than you spend this is for you, get it now, is a short book and well worth it.
Fantastic book depending on your circumstances.

But as a high-stakes player whose background was not in Poker I always had an interest in him as a person. So when I’d learnt that he’d written this book about dying after he had spent or given away all his money my interest was peaked even further.
Bill is a very easy-going upfront fun guy. But there is more to the man than meets the eye and he is definitely someone who knows what they’re talking about when it comes to wealth, health and happiness.
This book is an eye-opener to anyone who has merely read self-help material that promotes a good way of life and to anyone thinking that it all begins and ends with building a fortune they need to read this to think again.
This isn’t just about giving away all of your money it is about spending your money the right way so that you can enjoy it whilst you are alive.
It is also about the realisation of our time on Earth with our loved ones and the people we care about and also doing the things we want to do.
Bill talks us through how and why we should be more thoughtful with what we do in our lives both when it comes to how we earn our money and how we spend it.
This does not fall within the get rich quick schemes or other self-help books which only promote the plus side of being wealthy. This book will put you in tune with your own mortality and give you ideas that you can put into practice so that you can enjoy the rest of your life whilst being happy.
It’s a very short read which makes it ideal to return to again and again to refresh your memory and the ideas within it.
I love the fact that he has provided this information and chosen to read it himself. Thanks Bill!
I’m ALL IN with Bill on this one.
