About this listen

Alex Kingston reads her brand-new novel featuring River Song, from the worlds of Doctor Who.

1939, New York. Private-eye Melody Malone is hired to find a stolen ruby, the Eye of Horus. The ruby might hold the secret to the location of Cleopatra's tomb - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies.

Can Melody escape the ruby's curse?

1939, New York. River Song, author of the Melody Malone mysteries, is forced to find a reality-altering weapon, the Eye of Horus - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies. River doesn't believe in curses - but is she wrong?

From the top-security confines of Stormcage to the barbarism of first-century Egypt, River battles to find the Eye of Horus before its powers are used to transform the universe. To succeed, she must team up with a most unlikely ally - her own fictional alter ego, Melody. And together they must solve another mystery: is fiction changing into fact - or is fact changing into fiction?

All the things you'd expect from the redoubtable River Song, and then some! A genuinely gripping tale, woven with smooth, dark chocolate wit, intrigue and as full of sparkle as the Galerie des Glase. Encore!

Exuberant, smart, engaging.

Alex Kingston brings her novel to life in a way only the author and actor of River, her performance is energetic, playful and full of warmth and joy. The story explores many possibilities of time travel, looping back and rushing forward at the same time with characters that come alive. The descriptions of places and settings left me with the sense of being there, the sights, scents, grime of New York and sands of... spoilers. ;)

I Hope this is the first of many River Song/ Melody Malone novels.

Unique and wonderful

A who done it, meets science fiction, meets science fantasy! Yes all of those and written into a compelling plot to boot!
I was a little put off, not knowing if the author could narrate as well as write an engaging book, but I needn't have worried, she was good in both areas.
I'm not sure yet if I'll read another of her books, there was a little too much fantasy for my taste in this mix...however, I did enjoy it and she left no loose ends!
