Summary

This is the story of the fall of an Empire – and the rise of another.

Who spread Christianity, how, and why? In her quest to find the answer, Professor Alice Roberts takes us on a gripping investigative journey. From a secluded valley in south Wales to the shores of Brittany; from the heart of the Roman Empire in a time of political turmoil to the ancient city of Corinth in the footsteps of the apostle Paul; from Alexandria in the fourth century to Constantinople.

As the Roman Empire crumbled in Western Europe, a shadow of power remained, almost perfectly mapping onto its disappearing territories. And then, it continued to spread. Unearthing the archaeological clues and challenging long-established histories, Professor Roberts tells a remarkable story about the relationship between the Roman Empire and Christianity.

Lifting the veil on secrets that have been hidden in plain sight, this story is nothing short of astonishing.

Domination is a page-turning exploration of power and its survival.

Critic reviews

'The story of how the Roman Empire became the Christian Empire has never been better explained. Alice Roberts's narrative energy and readability makes Domination a historical thriller of the highest quality' (Stephen Fry)
‘An incisive, provocative and sometimes polemical account of one of the most important organisations in human history’ (New Scientist)
Domination blasts new light into the seemingly dark moments when Christianity emerged as the predominant religion of empires. Sweeping across texts, objects, individuals, and putting material culture and archaeological revelations centre stage, this is an epic reevaluation of a time that still defines so many across the world to the present day. Robert’s captivating writing takes you on a journey back through time, unravelling mysteries by plunging into the earth to see the echoes left by people, their beliefs and their systems of power' (Janina Ramirez)
‘A wonderfully accessible slice of archaeological history’ (i)

Having seen Alice perform this on stage (with a really bad cold to boot) this audio book brought it all together.
Would thoroughly recommend you listen. It confirms my thoughts on Christianity.

Incredibly well researched and interesting and I love the reading of it.
Essential read to begin to understand the “success” of Christianity throughout history from a historical and archaeological perspective, meaning rooted in as much truth as it can be found in the historical records and what remains that have been discovered.

Always a fan of her work

Domination tells the tale of the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Christian one. Full of Alice Roberts personal journey and investigation as well as plenty of re-examining of sources and archaeological evidence, Domination is fascinating and relevant.
Whether you're interested in Roman history, Christianity or just like the writing of Alice Roberts there is so much more than you think there will be for you within these pages. This is an excellent read.

More interested than I expected

I wasn't sure about whether or not to buy this, but I've liked pretty well everything I've read or heard by Professor Roberts and decided to give it a try.
And I found it really interesting and engaging. Lots of solid historical facts drawn together and coming to a convincing conclusion. Despite Prof Roberts being a prominent humanist, there's nothing here which is critical of christian teachings. I suspect some of the facts presented here may demolish ideas held by many which are based on popular christian mythology rather than fact, like christianity initially being a very minor and primarily literate religion restricted to the Roman middle- and upper-classes rather than the "poor", and some of the well-known missions to the British Isles converting people from one version of christianity to another.

Interesting and well-narrated
