Summary

'If great books encourage you to look at the world in an entirely new way, then Dominion is a very great book indeed . . . Written with terrific learning, enthusiasm and good humour, Holland's book is not just supremely provocative, but often very funny' Sunday Times History Book of the Year

Christianity is the most enduring and influential legacy of the ancient world, and its emergence the single most transformative development in Western history. Even the increasing number in the West today who have abandoned the faith of their forebears, and dismiss all religion as pointless superstition, remain recognisably its heirs. Seen close-up, the division between a sceptic and a believer may seem unbridgeable. Widen the focus, though, and Christianity's enduring impact upon the West can be seen in the emergence of much that has traditionally been cast as its nemesis: in science, in secularism, and yes, even in atheism.

That is why Dominion will place the story of how we came to be what we are, and how we think the way that we do, in the broadest historical context. Ranging in time from the Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC to the on-going migration crisis in Europe today, and from Nebuchadnezzar to the Beatles, it will explore just what it was that made Christianity so revolutionary and disruptive; how completely it came to saturate the mind-set of Latin Christendom; and why, in a West that has become increasingly doubtful of religion's claims, so many of its instincts remain irredeemably Christian. The aim is twofold: to make the listener appreciate just how novel and uncanny were Christian teachings when they first appeared in the world; and to make ourselves, and all that we take for granted, appear similarly strange in consequence. We stand at the end-point of an extraordinary transformation in the understanding of what it is to be human: one that can only be fully appreciated by tracing the arc of its parabola over millennia.

In first read Tom Holland’s Rubicon and thoroughly enjoyed it. This book, I expected to be more personally educational to me and I wasn’t wrong. For anyone interested in history, this is a great listen that will take you from the ancient Middle East, to modern times and covers everything from the slave trade to the Lord of the Rings and the Beetles.

Another great book

A fascinating view of the influence of Christian ethics and a Christian worldview on so much of history in the West and further afield. Although it recognises the “audacity” of the core belief that God died on a cross it doesn’t reflect on the crucial belief to Christians that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Therefore it sadly fails to recognise that true Christianity is a relationship with the living God who himself came to die on a cross to make that relationship possible. It is not just another religion requiring followers to work their way to a god or whatever paradise is promised, for our God came to us!

It’s an understandable mistake that many in the west who would call themselves Christian’s sadly make too. But Christianity isn’t a dry set of morals and rituals, it’s a relationship with the living Lord Jesus Christ through His word by His Spirit. That is the key to why Christianity has survived so long and is growing so fast now in the southern hemisphere, especially in places theoretically closed to Christian evangelism.

This is an interesting secular book. It gives credit to the Bible for much of western thinking and principles of human rights. Which seems to make sense. But don’t read it expecting to understand Christianity. Much that is quoted as Paul’s belief from an out of context Bible quote is misinterpreted because it isn’t fully understood. But overall it’s an interesting view of history.

An interesting view of history

I read the ebook version of this for the first 80%, only to decide I would need to re-read the whole thing and audio would be better for that purpose. I'm so delighted I got the audio as well, the book becomes so much more alive when read by Tom Holland

This book makes history and easy to follow fascinating story and contains great insights. The latter part of the book draws on the episodes and people covered in the earlier part of the book. Tom Holland brings to the forefront all the assumptions we hold without realising and points out where these assumptions come from, even from sides that are apparently at loggerheads, each holding assumptions that have their roots in Christendom.

Fantastic - Wonderful to hear Tom Holland Read this himself

I found this book immensely rich in historical stories that ranged across ancient eras I have, despite a burgeoning fascination, hitherto struggled to access. But it's not just a history book about kings and conquests because the thread running through it is the story of the part played by religion, that is to say, Christianity, explained and revisited, respectfully but unflinchingly. Tom is so good at illustrating context so that events become comprehensible. His ultimate thesis, it seems to me, is deeply investigated and brilliantly intelligent. This is a book you can really get your teeth into.

Tom's sharp mind, exquisite articulacy and originality of thought
