Summary

Mae finds herself pregnant in a world where the global population has hit twenty billion, and governments decree that no child may be born without a life being sacrificed in return.

With growing unrest and violence towards pregnant women, Mae must navigate a hostile world to secure a future for her unborn child — no matter the cost. When the stakes are so high, how far would you go to protect your family?

I liked this so much I had to get the next 2 straight away. I was just too invested. Good LGBTQ+ representation - characters are developed and part of society rather than tokenistic representation. People actually have a personality other than their orientation or gender. I really enjoyed the pace and mix of relationship building/action. What I didn't like was the complete inability of the narrator to do any accent well. This series has regional and national identities represented in this narration by very bad, very distracting accents. Think, Italian represented as a Geordie/Yorkshire/Irish mashup a d you won't be far off. But the fact I continued to listen despite that reinforced to me how good the actual plot is.

Great dystopian trilogy, baaad accents by the narrator

Loved the characters in this book, Pasha & Mays difficult journey and the twist at the end. Leaves me wanting more. Onto the next in the trilogy !

If you like a dystopian read, this book is for you

Thought provoking - be great for a book club, lots of discussion points. Enjoyed the characters.

Good start to trilogy

I had high hopes, but found the story a bit lacking overall. It was a good idea, but the characters made bad obvious choices and that was irritating.
I really disliked the narrator and found she lacked flow and emphasis in the right places and I found it quite off putting. I may have enjoyed it more reading it, but as an audiobook it was a let down.

It's OK
