Critic reviews

"The plot is nothing new - it might be described as Spenser meets New Jack City - but Deuce 's snappy dialogue, timely, fast-paced action and quick characterizations make it classic Spenser." (Publishers Weekly)

I love Robert B Parker’s novels and the characterizations and dialogue . This book is a little more introspective and reflective and with less of the usual reparte between the characters than we all love . When reading it it fits into the eco system of Spenser. But since we read the books for the characters interaction ( Spenser , Hawk , Belsen ,Quirk , Susan , Vinnie , Tony etc) not specifically the story - they are an extended family of people we have known for 40 years.
Unfortunately the narration of this book performance leaves much to be desired compared to those narrated by joe Mantegna or others. Some of the voices are grating and annoying hawk sounds flaky , Belsen is virtually impossible to understand , Many of the characters end up sounding off . Overall it’s not sympathetic to characterization of 30 + other books .
Its Ok, but a bit like you know Tom Cruise (great actor that he is with an amazing portfolio of action performances) can’t possibly be Jack Reacher.

Good story, poor narration

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I love this book, its one of my favourites of RBP but David Dukes delivery of Hawk is terrible, i only managed about 6 minutes before I had enough. Hawk is a tough talking, strong african American male yet in this David Dukes makes him sound like a 12 year old girl. TERRIBLE, dont waste your money on any RBP Books that he narrates.

What didn’t you like about David Dukes’s performance?

Poor delivery and interpretation of characters

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

David Dukes is wrong for this
