Summary

Dragons are extinct in the wild, but the Makepeace Institute of Integrated Dragon Studies in Smokehill National Park is home to about two hundred of the world's remaining creatures. Until Jake discovers a dying dragon that has given birth - and one of the babies is still alive.

Read by Noah Galvin who has the perfect voice for teenage Jake who helps out at his dad's zoo, which just happens to hold about 200 of the world's remaining dragons in a large protected wilderness. When he finds a dying dragon and her defenceless baby, he takes care of the tiny creature, thereby breaking a number of laws. The style is chatty and engaging. The narrator is brilliant, bringing Jake to life.

I am a sucker for a dragon story anyway, but especially when the approach to dragons is unusual. This one was particularly imaginative, making dragons fit seamlessly into a modern world very similar to our own. Loved the dragons. Loved the setting. The narrator's voice fitted the first person narration of the book perfectly.

I find this book rather unique in my hunt for dragon books. The presentation took a little getting used to, but I came to really enjoy it. A pleasant surprise among the plus catalogue that I'll be adding to my permanent collection at some point. It had real heart and felt grounded, with lovable characters, especially the dragons. I would certainly have read more, had more been written.

45 minutes in, the story has got nowhere and the narrator's delivery really grates. Even though this is free on the plus catalogue, I'm calling ot a day.
