About this listen

A YA Dragon Fantasy Adventure with a Dragon King, An Untamed Dragon Rider, and A Unique Magic Spin

The battle for Torvald begins.

Bower, the reluctant heir to a fallen noble house, has inherited a destiny he never wanted: to rise as Torvald’s rightful king and free his people from the cruel grip of King Enric. With war looming, Bower must confront not only his enemies but his own self-doubt.

By his side stands Saffron, a fierce and unyielding Dragon Rider whose power may hold the key to victory. Together, they forge an alliance with Ryland, a charismatic but untrustworthy leader of rogue Dragon Riders, uniting a fractured rebellion against the Dark Mage king. But as distrust simmers among their ranks and deadly foes close in, the fragile coalition teeters on the edge of collapse.

On the eve of battle, Bower must embrace the prophecy that foretells his rise—or risk the kingdom’s destruction. With dragons stirring, allies wavering, and his future kingdom hanging in the balance, the time has come for Bower to lead or lose everything.

Expanded and republished in November 2024, Dragons of Kings returns with even more magic, danger, and adventure.

I raced through Dragons of Kings with a grin plastered on my face, and though not without its flaws, I’m awarding it five stars for the sheer joy of witnessing the long-forgotten bond between humans and dragons reignited—a power destined to overthrow the dark mage king and restore balance to a fractured realm. From the first pages, the stakes feel higher, the lore richer, and each twist propels the narrative forward with an irresistible momentum.

The sequel’s flair is undeniable! Every chapter peels back another layer of what it means to be human and dragon. As our heroes push into uncharted territories, their growth feels earned, mirroring Richardson’s exploration of loyalty and power. Ryland, leader of the rogue Dragon Riders with a magnetic edge, emerges as the standout newcomer, while secondary figures earn meaningful arcs even if a handful of introductions feel a tad rushed.

Tiffany Williams has clearly settled more comfortably into Richardson’s world, bringing subtler inflections to her performance and distinguishing voices with greater confidence than in Book One. She seldom stumbles, and her narration glides with natural ease; I often found myself so lost in the dialogue that I forgot it wasn’t a live performance, which speaks to her growing mastery of the material.

When the finale arrived, it tore at my heart and then stitched it back together with threads of hope. I sat in stunned silence before frantically queuing up Book Three. If you crave immersive world-building, dragons with real personalities, and a story where ancient alliances can topple tyrants, Dragons of Kings will make you feel like you’ve truly earned your wings.

This continues the story of Bower, young rightful heir with confidence issues and his female companion Saffron who is a dragon rider. Together they have to negotiate the evil Eric who has usurped the throne and has power, magical powers and resources. Our paired hero and heroine come of age and into their powers in the course of the story. There is plenty of action and rise and fall in fortunes. It is a chaste relationship with respect for their roles and complementing their strenghts and weaknesses. I felt some of the plot twists and discovered powers were a little too convenient for the participants which is why I have not awarded the full stars for story. I still enjoyed it and immersed myself in the world of kings, dragons and magic which will be familiar to anyone who has read other books by Ava Richardson.
The narrator did an excellent job of distinguishing voices and conveying appropriate emotion for dragons, humans and baddies.

Dragons of Kings is incredible. The world building is absolutely incredible and I as fully immersed in this riveting tail of yet another generation fighting the evil that grips this land. The fact that Enric is still alive to torment the land and to try to blot dragons from the earth is just incredible. The power Enric weilds is both dangerous and fascinating. I love getting to know Bower and Saffron as they struggle to understand who and what they are with almost all knowledge has been scattered to the winds of time. I am amazed at their fire and grit as they stand against an insidious evil that threatens to wipe them out along with all dragon kind as a fallen kingdom must learn to fight anew. I can’t wait to listen to the next installment this was incredible and the narration is spot on bring this epic adventure to life! If you love dragons you will love this series!
