About this listen

Diana Gabaldon’s fans will be delighted to find Jamie and Claire as spirited and endearing as ever in this fourth installment of this magnificent saga. Romance, history, and time travel blend once again as the couple builds a new life together in the wilderness of pre–Revolutionary America.

Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century.

The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior, but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time, twenty years later, she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

Critic reviews

"Gabaldon's range is impressive, whether she's evoking the rawness of colonial America, the cozy clutter of a modern Scottish parsonage, the lusts of the body or the yearnings of the spirit. Her legion of fans will love diving into this ocean of romance." ( Publishers Weekly)

If you could sum up Drums of Autumn in three words, what would they be?

Surviving in pioneering America

What was one of the most memorable moments of Drums of Autumn?

The rescue of Roger from the Indians

Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favourite?

Clare is performed perfectly but somehow she manages to pull off a six foot six highlander with no problem too

After their ship wrecked in America, Clare, Jamie and Ian make their way to Jamie's great aunt. Little do they know that Brianna has found a death notice for her parents and so makes her own trip through the stones to try and save them.

We get to know Roger a lot more and I enjoyed the pioneering aspect of starting Fraser Ridge afresh. The dog Rollo was sweet too, albeit probably a wolf!

Love all of Diana Gabaldon 's books. I have read Drums os Autumn 4 times and couldn't listen to the story narrated by anyone else but Davina Porter!

Wonderful story

Outwardly a romantic tale of time travel, love, loss and legend, this is also a well-researched saga describing the bitter hardship of the Scots after Culloden. The narrative continues with perilous sea crossings, piracy, slavery, and the struggle to gain a foothold in the New World, with a fascinating look at immigrant life and Native American society. Add in a cast of vividly painted characters, wild landscapes, and superb narration from Davina Porter, and the result is a story you will not want the rest of your life to interrupt!

Claire is re-united with Jamie Fraser, and her daughter Brianna also makes the perilous journey into the past.

I don't quite now why but I keep on rereading this particular book with the same pleasure.
As the only character on film I am not fond of is Brianna, I actually dread to see how she will perform next season on Amazon, but like most fans I cannot wait to see what the film version will have made of that great book 4.
