Julius Caesar has taken his legions north into mighty battles with the Gallic tribes. But as his successes mount, overwhelming ambition and new alliances begin to threaten his friendship with Marcus Brutus, brother-in-arms and fellow warrior. Although the conquest of Gaul has made Caesar a hero all over again, his victories on the battlefield cause still more rivalries at home. And ultimately Caesar and Brutus will have to choose whether to cross the Rubicon - together or singly - and to take the fight to Rome itself.©2005 Conn Iggulden (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Epic tale set in ancient Rome. Hard to adapt to a new voice actor though

Love the story but wish the reader wouldn't change

Have loved the series so far, however was disappointed when I heard the narrator make a pigs out of pronouncing the characters names, Pompey being pronounced like the city of Pompeii!
I will persist, but I find it really annoying every time names of characters or cities are mispronounced. Surely whoever edited this should’ve noticed the difference between pronunciations. I know narrators for books change but in this case it was a mistake.
Despite the changing narrator, I’m enjoying this book stories well written and I’ve always enjoyed his historical fiction

Good story shame about the narration

Echoing others, the changed pronunciation of names made it impossible for me to finish. I'll be getting the eBooks instead to finish the series.

Sadly spoiled by narration

This is an excellent book as were the previous two in the series, however, the change in the choice of narrator was a bad move.
The pronunciations are pathetic and he has not the same empathy with the story as had the narrator of the first two books.
This narrator made an excellent book painful to listen to and he obviously loves the sound of his own voice.

Why change the narrator?

What were they thinking, letting this narrator loose on this book? A narrator is supposed to melt into the background and bring the story to life, not to insist on making his mark by drawing attention to himself with his 'proudly authentic' pronunciation of various names and terms. Even worse than 'Octawiarn' were 'PompAY', 'glahrdius' and 'sickterti'. I'm only persisting as I'm enjoying the story, but the narration is WOEFUL to the point of criminality. Even his reading of the plain narrative makes you switch off and miss stuff - he's just not engaging at all, sadly :(

Bring back Robert Glenister!
