The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs - the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness...their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth: he has been enlisted by these savage, inscrutable warriors to help combat a terror that plagues them - a monstrosity that emerges under cover of night to slaughter the Vikings and devour their flesh....

Eaters of the Dead was adapted to the screen as The 13th Warrior, starring Antonio Banderas.

I always enjoy a re-telling of a common tale or legend. The mythos is kept alive as the original also intended, as should all our mythology.

A great spin on the tale of Beowulf.

I loved the film but this is dull in comparison. the autobiographical style and the obviously made up academic references suck the life out of what is otherwise a great story. I struggled to finish it.

Loved it. It's like the book version of a docudrama. I loved the way the story unfolds and gives us plausible explanations for aspects of Norse mythology and the Beowulf legend. Will be looking out for Simon Vance narrations as he had me hooked.

Engrossing Take on Beowulf

This book was highly enjoyable, quite simply a great read. Admittedly the start is a little slow however once clicked into the writing style of curious detailing, you will be thrown into the world of the Norse! Highly recommended.

Enveloped with thrilling historical storytelling

I'm a pretty big Crichton fan anyway, so I was pretty sure I'd enjoy it and I wasnt disappointed.

It was filled with what would have been the most up to date and accurate historical information of the time, though some of it has since been pushed aside.

Regardless, the story itself was cohesive, easy to follow and engaging. A good book.

A really interesting Beowulf retelling
