About this listen

Author Edith Wharton is best known for her books set amongst the upper-echelon of New York society, including "The House of Mirth" and "The Age of Innocence," (the latter of which won her the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction).

But Wharton also wrote two American classics that take place in rural settings: the then-scandalous tale of youthful rebellion,"Summer" and her haunting novel of love and regret, "Ethan Frome." Both have gone on to be considered among the finest novels of the early 20th century.

We are proud to present both of these books in one volume, each in their original and unabridged format.

Edith Wharton is one of my favourite writers, but for me, these novellas are below her usual standard. The stories are quite bleak and don't seem to hang together as well as in the longer novels or other shorter works. However my judgement may be unfairly biased by the dreadful narration which made it an unpleasant listen. Most of the reading was overloud, melodramatic squawking more suitable for a high school dramatic performance and even at 0.8x speed, it was a constant assault on the eardrums. The narrator seemed unwilling to let the words speak for themselves, which is normally a strength of Edith Wharton's writing and I will avoid any other audiobooks by the same person.

Not her best and terrible narration
