About this listen

If you thought music theory was dull, think again! With the right guidance, it can be woven into every practice – and you'll see astounding results straight away.

Playing by ear will get you a long way – it certainly worked for Jimi Hendrix.

But the world will only ever know one Hendrix… and for every inspirational story you’ve heard about a famous guitarist who knows nothing of music theory, there’s a whole host of other stories about musicians who do – they’re just not the ones who make the headlines.

Understanding music theory gives you a superpower as a guitarist – you experience every note, chord, and melody as so much more than just a sound… and that allows you to create much more complex music.

Music theory is simply a language – and that means it’s possible for anyone to speak it – as long as they have the will to practice and the right hand to guide them.

That doesn’t mean hours of study… If your passion is playing the guitar, it means finding a way to absorb all that theory practically and use it immediately.

When you do that, your instincts and your knowledge combine to allow you complete musical freedom and the chance to really hone your skills.

Not many music theory books will offer you that, but you’re about to discover something new.

Inside this unique approach to music theory for guitarists, you’ll discover:

  • How to get to know your guitar… and the critical role each piece of it plays
  • Why having the right strings and picks matters – and how you can make sure your guitar is equipped with the best
  • Essential techniques for strumming and picking like a pro
  • The foundational building blocks of music theory – with practical exercises you can use immediately
  • The secret to finding your way around the fretboard instinctually – and the incredible power this unlocks
  • How to use the ‘note circle’ to find or discover any note (and why you’ll want to)
  • The simple visual device that makes learning chords 100x easier – and how to use it to take your guitar skill

I recently decided to learn to play guitar after playing violin and piano when I was younger. This book reviewed the basic, beginning music theory that can apply to any instrument, like chords, scales, and the circle of fifths. Plus, there were helpful tips for applying this to learning to play the guitar without needing to sight-read music. The only thing that detracted was the narration. Now, this is just my own personal bias, I am sure, but the narrator seemed flippant or comical to me with exaggerated words and tone of voice. He was probably just trying to be optimistic and expressive, but it came across as slapstick.
