About this listen

Why are millions of young Americans turning away from organized religion—yet leaning harder than ever into spirituality?

Faith Unbound delivers the answer through a powerful blend of research, storytelling, cultural analysis, and honest reflection.

In this eye-opening exploration, award-winning author Myles McGuire traces the dramatic rise of the “Spiritual but Not Religious” (SBNR) movement among Millennials and Gen Z. Drawing from history, sociology, and lived experiences, McGuire examines how a generation shaped by economic turmoil, political polarization, digital overload, and institutional distrust is forging its own spiritual identity outside the walls of the church.

Rather than depicting faith as fading, Faith Unbound reveals a transformation—a shift toward personal meaning, moral curiosity, and an inner search for purpose that thrives far beyond traditional pews.

Inside this timely and thought-provoking audiobook, listeners will discover:

  • Why Millennials are leaving religious institutions in record numbers
  • How spirituality is evolving through mindfulness, social justice, and personal exploration
  • The cultural forces redefining belief in modern America
  • The psychological and social benefits of the SBNR identity
  • What religious leaders can learn—and how faith communities can adapt and reconnect
  • How younger generations are reshaping the future of American spirituality

Compassionate, grounded, and richly researched, Faith Unbound is both a mirror and a map—reflecting where we are and illuminating where spiritual life is headed next.

Whether you’re a believer, a seeker, or someone simply curious about the future of faith in our changing world, this audiobook offers clarity, nuance, and hope.

I've just finished Faith Unbound on audio. It came at the perfect time. My two 19-year-olds have pretty much left church behind but still talk about “energy,” meditation apps, crystals, and “being spiritual.” I wanted to understand what was going on without jumping straight to judgment.
The audiobook does a cracking job explaining the shift: distrust of institutions after scandals, the internet giving access to every belief system under the sun, burnout from rigid church culture, and a genuine hunger for personal, flexible spirituality that doesn’t come with guilt or politics. The mix of research, honest interviews, cultural analysis, and real stories is balanced and thoughtful. There is no heavy-handed agenda, just clear-eyed observation.
The narrator’s calm, reflective voice made it easy to listen on the commute, and the blend of data and personal accounts kept it engaging rather than dry. It’s helped me have better conversations with my kids: they’re not “rejecting faith” so much as finding it in different places. I feel more patient and less worried about them being “lost.”
If you’re a parent, grandparent, or anyone trying to make sense of why young people are “spiritual but not religious,” this audiobook is well worth your time.

I started this audiobook out of curiosity and ended up finishing it quicker than expected. It touches on questions I’ve heard many people my age talk about regarding belief and belonging. Listening to the ideas made me reflect on my own views and conversations with friends about spirituality and community.
