Lady Adelaide Compton had prepared herself to say good-bye forever to Detective Inspector Devenand Hunter. It would be a welcome relief not to get mixed up in any more murders, even if it meant never working alongside the handsome detective again...wouldn't it?

But then Addie's prim and proper mother, Constance, the Dowager Marchioness of Broughton, is accused of murdering her secret lover, and there can't be enough gentlemen detectives on hand to find the truth. The great thing about the Lady Adelaide mystery stories is there is the right mixture of drama, romance and the supernatural all against an historical background of the 1920s. I presume this is the last in the series so you may want to start with one of the others in the series first but I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

The story is OK but let down by very poor narration. I know the author is American and the narrator, although English, lives and works in America, but the story is set in England with English characters and is read in a posh upper-class English accent. So why all the American pronunciations? "Thur-oh" for thorough, "Paree-shan" for Parisian, "boo-eed" for buoyed, "re-moon-eration" for remuneration, "clurk" for clerk and so on. If it was read in an American accent, it would make sense, but it just jars. Other odd pronunciations (e.g. machinations, Tyrolean, hussar) suggest the reader is simply not familiar with these words. And who ever pronounced the name Alistair with the emphasis on the last syllable?

A great ending to this collection of murder mysteries, this time to get her mother out of jail,. With the ghost of her late husband still helping while she tried to help the detective, who has taken sick leave to help her mother privately it all becomes a bit of a farce. Read brilliantly again by Gamma Dawson.
