About this listen

A decorated veteran. A fractured family. An explosive conspiracy. Kendall Gatlin thought his toughest battles were behind him—until terror strikes again.

Haunted by shadows of war, Kendall's life is a delicate balancing act on a threadbare wire. Divorce has left him teetering between past scars and present responsibilities, all for the sake of love for his children. A bond reforged with battle buddy Brent Sullivan sends them on foreign soil, yearning for solace amid emotional ruins. But in Germany, fate takes a cruel twist. An explosion ruptures their fragile peace, catapulting them into the abyss of suspicion. In a world rife with deception, even Kendall’s sharp instincts can’t untangle the treacherous web alone.

When Lisa and his children vanish, panic engulfs his reality. The clock ticks down, and enemies close in, but Kendall won’t rest until they’re safe. Allies are few, and betrayals crouch in every shadow. Can Kendall unravel the conspiracy before it spirals out of control? Rescuing his family demands more than courage—it demands finding the truth—a truth that cuts deeper than any weapon.

Our hero main character is trying to settle into civilian life, but, like his service buddies, he needs to overcome the PTSD. He meets up with some former colleagues and for no very good reason one of them suggests going on holiday to Germany and the very city where there has been a terrorist attack. This embroils him in conflict with the police and international organisations opposing terrorism. His loved ones become mixed into the problems and this angers him more. There are plenty of action scenes and we witness him wrestling with who can be trusted as well as being on the wrong side of the authorities. He gets access to some useful assets and the climax seemed a little improbable to me. Together with the unlikely adventure to cure PTSD thse factors lost the book a star. Quick listen with a few twists.

The narrator mostly voiced the American characters well and distinctively, but struggled with European.
