About this listen

An inspiring insight into one of the oldest extreme sports, this is the definitive story of fell-running. This is a complete portrait of one of the few sports to have remained utterly true to its roots. Richard Askwith’s journey takes him into a world of forbidding rockscapes, horizontal rain, fear, exhaustion and stunning natural beauty, as well as his own attempt at one of the toughest challenges imaginable: the Bob Graham Round, the sport’s traditional test of 42 Lake District peaks in 24 hours.

Gripping, funny and moving, this is a story that any aspiring runner, endurance athlete or mountain-lover will understand well: of extremity, heroism and the experience of a lifetime.

A wonderful, encyclopedic history of fell and mountain running. Hard not to fantasize about upping sticks and moving to a stone cottage in the Cumbrian Fells!

As someone who was 11 when this book was published and who has always been a road runner; I must confess I was a little skeptical about whether I would enjoy and find relevance in it.

However I am more than happy to admit that I shouldn’t have judged it so quickly. It is superbly narrated and immerses the listener in the world of fell running. You can’t help but feel inspired as Richard recounts tales of Naylor, Bland and Teesdale among others. Runners who must be some of the most naturally gifted athletes of their generation, yet the general public knows little of them. It conveys a running world where people run for the pleasure of running, not concerned with the commercialisation of the sport with prize money, medals, tshirts and the ultra competitive Strava stats, and that’s incredibly refreshing.

I can see how this book has played it’s role in attracting a new generation to the fells, it’s certainly inspired me to give it a go in my native Mourne Mountains.

If you have any interest in running at all, I would encourage you to give the book a listen. If you stick with it through the early chapters you won’t be disappointed.

An absolute classic

Absolutely loved hearing about the history of fell running. I’m from Preston just a short drive up to the Lake District and I’ve been running the wainwright just by myself, just for fun, when someone put me onto this book. I now find myself wanting to turn these runs into something more. I can’t wait to get back up there and see the beautiful peaks in a whole new light!

Make you want to get up and go!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Fascinating and incredibly well researched insight into fell running and the community it breeds. Finished the last few chapters lied in the Greek sun which somehow didn’t feel quite right considering the nature of the book. Brilliant read and narration equally so.

An excellent reading of the classic Feet in the Clouds. If you have any interest in fell running books then you should definitely check this out. Funny at times, filled with interesting stories of the history of fell running in the lakes and of a few of the major characters, this is outstanding.

Finishes with a chapter with the author talking about the impact of the book that first was published in 2004.

Richard, please release more on Audible!!!
