About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

How do we set about finding greater fulfilment in our lives? How do we achieve a sense of well-being? How do we foster relationships that will add depth and meaning to our existence? How, in other words, do we go from living to flourishing?

In his new book, bestselling author Daniel Coyle trains his expert eye on the people who have demonstrated exceptional powers of dynamism and connectivity, and teases out their secrets. The Chilean miners who withstood being trapped deep underground for 33 days by establishing rituals of belonging and purpose. The Dutch community that sparked urban renewal through a smart system of self-organisation. The delicatessen in Michigan that has grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise, not by writing business plans but by shaping attentional space – focussing on how people show up, listen and engage. From such remarkable stories of individual and group achievement, Coyle distils the core dynamics that make them possible – and, in the process, shows how small, deliberate shifts in how we think and interact can create extraordinary impact.

Whether you are seeking a deeper sense of personal contentment or aspiring to transform a team or community, Flourish is the indispensable guide to shaping the future you want.

Critic reviews

An eye-opening book about why certain people, projects, and places make us feel alive... With his signature combination of captivating cases, surprising science, and pristine prose, Daniel Coyle reveals how to build a more vibrant life.
At a time when we’re surrounded by noise but starved for meaning, Daniel Coyle points us toward something richer. Flourish shows how attention becomes connection, connection becomes community, and community becomes a life well lived.
Combining rigorous science with unforgettable storytelling, Daniel Coyle traces connections across seemingly unrelated worlds to reveal the blueprint for building lives and communities that are rich with meaning. Flourish is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand—and cultivate—what makes life worth living.
Daniel Coyle is one of my favourite writers, and in Flourish he redefines what we mean by a meaningful life. Faced with a personal loss and reckoning, he discovers a simple but profound idea: Flourishing isn’t something we find, it’s something we create. With compassion and clarity, Coyle shows that flourishing is a learnable craft
In a world obsessed with checklists and productivity hacks, we’re quietly starving for something deeper. Flourish is an essential guide to tapping our capacity for deeper connections, more meaningful conversations, and finding fulfilling outcomes together. . . . A must-read.
Daniel Coyle has done it again. At last, a book that isn’t about hacking your way to a better life. If you’re successful on paper but quietly wondering, Is this it?, this book is what you’re looking for
I loved Flourish. Every page of Daniel Coyle’s fascinating new book—informative and spiritual all at once—tells a story that will make you sit up and say, ‘Aha!’ You’ll recognize the good stuff in yourself within many of his stories, and with new tools, you can become an even more fulfilled version of the great person you already are
A wealth of wonderful insights! Anyone who’s ready to abandon the tired old win-lose models of business would be wise to lean into the lessons Flourish so abundantly demonstrates

This book is uplifting and inspiring because all the examples given are about spending real, authentic present moments. Flourishing is a process of creating deep connections through shared attention, purpose, and community, rooted in simple, present-moment interactions rather than grand plans. You have to let chaos to lead to harmony. I will keep in mind Zingerman's deli, the Dutch total football team, and the "yellow doors" to try something new that may lead to flourishing.

The big question we should ask is: why does it matter?
