Summary

Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, 16-year-old Amber St. Clare manages, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England - that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from events such as the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary - and extraordinary - men and women, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her trials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have. Frequently compared to Gone with the Wind, Forever Amber is the other great historical romance, outselling every other American novel of the 1940s - despite being banned in Boston for its sheer sexiness. A book to listen to again and again, this edition brings back to print an unforgettable romance and a timeless masterpiece.

I’d heard about this book from my mother. It was a best seller during the 1940s but was also banned by the Catholic Church. I was not sure at first if I would like it but I became completely engrossed. The book is set in England during the reign of Charles II and I loved the detailed and vivid descriptions of that period and the intertwining of fiction and real historical characters. It’s a long audiobook and I was interested to learn that the original manuscript was significantly shortened before publication. The ending was perfect but I am sorry the author did not write a sequel as I was left wanting to know what happened next. The main character Amber is a scheming selfish minx but I still somehow warmed to her. The later part of the novel when Bruce stayed in England for several months did start to get a bit bland and repetitive and could have been cut without the storyline suffering. Amber has a fixation with Bruce to the point of stalking him like a madwoman. We never get to know what Bruce really feels about Amber and I missed not having that revelation. Amber also had an interesting past and unwittingly marries one of her mother’s suitors but Amber never realises this and I thought the novel would have benefited too from more revelations on what really happened to her parents. All in all though I loved this book.

Epic story!

Obsessed. Always will be. Dream for someone to make into a movie trilogy. Needs a bit of tweaking to bring up to date with modern society but it has it all and it’s honestly my favourite book of all time. Also historically very accurate and detailed.

The 6th time I’ve read this book.

I first read this book about 25 years ago and was so pleased to find out here on Audible. The reader did an excellent job of bringing it to life. Background sound effects would have enhanced it even more. Please Amazon, make this book into a movie or mini series. And please continue the story after Amber gets to America.

The reader's excellent rendition of a classic!

Read this first in my teens, then in intervals of ten years or so. I love audio books - the longer the better and I searched for this one and it was nearly 40 hours of love, lust, drama, history. Amber has a piece of my heart forever. I hope she found some peace 🙏🏻

A true classic epic

Loved this! The story is as old as time, in so much as it covers love, lust and obsession. The story is not saccharine sweet but on occasion did sound a little of the time it was written, by that I mean non PC. It’s a romp through an age of decadence and the author transports you back there with her phraseology and informative references. If you want to get engrossed in a book, this is the one. Narrator was in point the whole way through and didn’t disappoint.

Romping great story
