About this listen

Lady Emmaline Fitzhugh, a hopeless romantic, is tired of sitting with the wallflowers, waiting for her betrothed to come to his senses and marry her. When Emmaline reads one too many reports of his scandalous liaisons in the gossip rags, she takes matters into her own hands.

War-torn veteran Lord Drake devotes himself to forgetting his days on the Peninsula through an endless round of meaningless associations. He no longer wants to feel anything, but Lady Emmaline is making it hard to maintain a state of numbness. With her zest for life, she awakens his passion and desire for love.

The one woman Drake has spent the better part of his life avoiding is now the only woman he needs, but he is no longer a man worthy of his Emmaline. It is up to her to show him the healing power of love.

This book had all the right ingredients for my kind of book. The story had me laughing at times & crying at other times. There were times when I found myself shouting in frustration at Drake. Tim Campbell did a brilliant job as usual of bringing the book to life & taking me on a brilliant journey.
I'm off now to listen to the next instalment of this series.
I would definitely recommend it.

The hero is emotionally immature and racked with guilt having lost men and a horse during the Napoleonic wars. He also suffers from PTSD. The heroine wants their betrothal, arranged when they were children, to proceed to marriage. The hero has resented the arrangement throughout and resists.
The notes that the heroine writes to the hero but never sends are charming. The rest of the story is a bit overdone. The narrator's plummy accent is more than a bit overdone in places and tends to slip.

Farfetched

I am fascinated to know why ANY WOMAN, would pursue such an unpleasant man, let alone wait 15 years for his attentions. Especially one who preferred to go to war than marry her. Who has made a point of ignoring her since they were betrothed. Who shows her no respect and flaunts his women in front of her and society. I refuse to accept the excuse; that he has PTSD. If you do end up married to such a man, your life would be hell. Having tolerated all the mistreatment, before the marriage. Why should he change?
I didn't like the Heroine either, as I found her particularly stupid. Her excuse for desperately hanging on to the contract; "she wishes to forefill her DEAD father's wishes." She doesn't care about her betrothed, it is all about her.
Then end was predictable, everyone despite all the problems live happily ever after.
A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME.

Pointless
