About this listen

It began as a fake marriage. It became so much more.

I’m Nick Whitley, CEO of Whitley Sports Industries. I’m a bonafide bachelor, and never intended to settle down. But I’m also a dependable kind of guy and do what’s right when I can.

So when my best friend and his wife pass away, leaving behind their twins, I do everything possible to help out their aunt—Allison . She’s gorgeous and funny and someone I enjoy being around. I even propose marriage when the kids’ grandparents unexpectedly contest the custody. It’s the only way Allison can win.

To make things legitimate, we need to live in one home, and sleep in one bed. Things escalate, but I’m all in. Not that it’s any hardship—Allison is damn perfect, and the twins are worming their way into my heart. I enjoy reading them bedtime stories, eating pizza, while watching the same cartoons for the millionth time. I’m ready to adopt them tomorrow if they’d have me. Now I’ve got to convince Allison that I’m the man for her, because I know without a shadow of a doubt that she’s the woman for me.

I've started this series almost at the end, having listened to Leo and Tori's story (book 7 - Loving the CEO) first. I thought that one was great but Nick and Alison's story here has been even better.

The storyline is very well developed and relatively believable. Despite the billions of dollars which Nick's family own and control and the high-powered job Alison does for a different company, characters are down to earth, hardworking and not overtly flashy. OK, the engagement and wedding rings scream "money" but the lifestyles are still relatively normal. People order pizza or live in 2 bedroom houses and sleep on small couches. Designer names aren't plastered all over and people talk about "possibly" taking the kids to Disneyland next year instead of honeymooning on a private island in the Carribbean. Heels there are, to be sure, but I haven't heard one person yet refer to their favourite pair of Manolo Blahniks.

There's clear growth of character in both Nick and Alison during the course of the tale. Their inner confusion about the changes in their own feelings for one another and about what exactly the other is feeling are manifestly clear. Though listeners understand them far better, it was easy and credible to hear how uncertain each person was about the eventual outcome of their "fake" marriage.

Alison is a strong FMC. Unusually in romances of this type, she's very in touch with her own sexuality, unafraid to ask for what she wants and more than happy to take an active part in her own pleasure and satisfaction. This delights Nick who's a thoughtful, considerate and passionate partner in this side of their relationship, as he is in all others. Of the 2 novels I've heard to date, this is the steamier.

Don't expect overtly graphic descriptions, high levels of kink, use of lots of "toys" etc. If you want something terribly demure and completely vanilla this won't suit you. Nor will it if you want something approaching BDSM or "trask talk". Instead, you might appreciate that these men don't refer to their partners using derogatory language and these women are as likely to obsess over abs as women in other novels are over lower parts of the male anatomy. Intimacy is described but in very sensual and passionate ways not in ones which might trigger feelings of worthnethness or helplessness. Partners are empowered, active and consensual participants in pleasure, not objects to be used or abused.

Other characters are well-rounded and relatable and the children of the family (not just those for whom Alison and Nick care) are recognisable and realistic little people who do the sorts of things little people really do (such as telling fibs about what they eat for breakfast; interrupting intimate scenes or not engaging with people who are prickly). There's nothing saccharine about these kids and, if they're spoilt, it's with an abundance of entirely understandable love.

The narration of the novel is excellent. Ms Bloom (one of my favourites) voices an Alison who sounds not just the right age but is sassy and uncertain by turns. She has a clear and distinct voice with the very merest hint of breathiness in there. That's enough to ensure she sounds warm and sexy at the right times but not so much that she sounds either immature or permanently ready for the bedroom! Mr Snow (another favourite) voices Nick as decisive, impulsive, powerful and used to success. Those characteristics come across not just in the words spoken but in how he narrates them. His voice is deep (but not bass) and there's quite a high level of creak in his intonation which gives Nick's voice the grit and growl so beloved by fans such as myself.

Don't come to these novels for fist fights, shootings, car chases or kidnappings. However, if you want to hear recognisable stories play out in a slightly rose-tinted way, both this and the previous novel might well suit you. The whole series is currently free in the Plus catalogue (for which I'm truly thankful) so I'm about to start where I possibly should have done with book 1 and work my way through the 6 I haven't yet heard. If books 7 and 8 are anything to go by, I think Ms Hagen will have done a brilliant job and will be going into my favourite "easy-listening authors" list. Give this a try if you want an undemanding swoony time!

Wonderful romance; excellent narration.
