About this listen

Beobrand is besieged in the action-packed instalment in the Bernicia Chronicles set in AD 647 Anglo-Saxon Britain.

War hangs heavy in the hot summer air as Penda of Mercia and his allies march into the north. Caught unawares, the Bernician forces are besieged within the great fortress of Bebbanburg. It falls to Beobrand to mount the defence of the stronghold, but even while the battle rages, old and powerful enemies have mobilised against him, seeking vengeance for past events.

As the Mercian forces tighten their grip and unknown killers close in, Beobrand finds himself in a struggle with conflicting oaths and the dreadful pull of a forbidden love that threatens to destroy everything he holds dear. With the future of Northumbria in jeopardy, will Beobrand be able to withstand the powers that beset him and find a path to victory against all the odds?

Critic reviews

"Matthew Harffy's tale of England in the Dark Ages is nothing less than superb.... The tale is fast paced and violence lurks on every page." (Historical Novel Society)

What can I say. Another masterpiece of historical fiction and superbly narrated by Barnaby Edwards.
I can’t wait for the next instalment.
I highly recommend this series of books to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

I have continued in this series without break and whilst it’s a great series and the narrator and authors ability to immerse you in the world of Beobrand, there is a definite repetition of sentences and descriptive words, both throughout each book and the series. That being said, I am rooting for Beobrand, though when I read about Penda it’s the other way around!
Definitely worth reading if you like tales early A.D life and war.

Addictive series BUT…

Another good story excellently narrated one complaint is that there was too much focus on the implausible romance between Beobrand and the queen which wasn’t bordering on something from a Mills and Boone story. I hope in the next book MH gets back to more of the conflicts of the period and historical interest. All that said the chronicles of bernicia are up there with the best historical fiction
