About this listen

After being shuffled around Portland’s foster care system until he was six years old, Keelan was finally adopted into a family that taught him that above all else, tradition was the foundation for a good life. Once you had that, you could pursue your dreams. And he’s doing that, building a new business park with his long-time friend Leyta.

Peter Larkins, who grew up without a mother and a father who taught him to take whatever he wanted and then move on to the next opportunity, arrived in Portland, ready for his next project and maybe have a little fun along the way.

So, when Keelan’s friend hires Peter as the project for their new venture, tensions grow. Will these two very different people butt heads? Or will they find commonality and be able to move forward, building a new foundation of love?

Foundations of Love is a prequel to Walter Hopgood and Lisa Witte’s Hart’s Square series, a Portland Business Park romance series of books.

I enjoyed this prequel by new-to me authors. The narrator was a new voice, too. It was a good introduction to Keelan and Peter, and the narration was pretty good. Individual voices were varied and distinct, and the pacing was good. The primary issue I have, and why I only gave a 4-star rating, is that the issues between Keelan and Peter were not discussed and worked out. When they finally talk after the break, Keelan just apologies (Peter doesn't), they kiss, and that's it. Then, the book skips ahead 10 months to the epilogue where the building is open, Keelan and Peter are a solid couple, and it's all good. The end.

I expected Keelan to explain to Peter what made him think what they had wasn't real, and for Peter to explain (and possibly apologize) for those things that distressed Keelan, and not to be expected to think that they somehow knew. The reader/listener knows because we were there, but the other MC wasn't. Still, good overall. I will be interested in more from this series.

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Good overall, but issues not resolved
