Summary

On this edition of Fresh Air, the focus is the work of underground comic book writer Harvey Pekar and the new film based on his life and work, American Splendor. Harvey has been described as "working-class Everyman," and "first-class curmudgeon." In 1976 he published the first in a series of comic books about his mundane life as a V.A. hospital clerk, and record collector in Cleveland. It was called American Splendor, and he's continued to publish them since. In 1987 one of them earned him an American Book Award. Now he's the subject of the new film American Splendor which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. He and his wife, Joyce Brabner, appear in the film. Then, filmmakers Shari Springer and Robert Pulcini are the team behind American Splendor which is a hybrid of fiction and documentary. Their previous documentaries are Off the Menu: The Last Days of Chasen's and The Young and the Dead. (Broadcast Date: August 4, 2003)(P) and ©2003 WHYY-FM

I have watched the film American Spendor and read the comic book. Terry, Harvey and Joyce talking and even the directors account is pitch perfect to send me to sleep. Its familiarity now means my brain connects subconsciously and starts to relax and send sleep brain waves. Best listen for relaxation at once

Thank you Audible for the only interview to send me to sleep night after night.
