Colombian senator and presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and journalist Stephen Dudley on this edition of Fresh Air. In a country controlled by drug cartels and corrupt government officials, Betancourt has spoken out against corruption. Her efforts have earned her and her family death threats. She travels with as many as a dozen bodyguards and sent her children away. Bentancourt grew up in Paris, the daughter of Colombia's ambassador to UNESCO. Her mother was a political activist. Bentancourt's book about her fight against corruption was a best seller in France, where it was first published. It's just been published in English under the title Until Death Do Us Part: My Struggle to Reclaim Colombia. Bentancourt is 39 years old.

Freelance journalist Stephen Dudley has been reporting from Colombia for five years for National Public Radio and Public Radio International's The World. (Broadcast Date: January 8, 2002)
