Summary

JAMES BOND GOES HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH SMERSH IN A BID TO SECURE A KEY PIECE OF SOVIET INTELLIGENCE

SMERSH, the Russian intelligence unit whose acronym stands for “Death to Spies,” is hell-bent on destroying Special Agent James Bond.

His death would deal a catastrophic hammer blow to the heart of the British Secret Service.

The lure? A beautiful woman who needs 007’s help. Tatiana Romanova is a Russian spy who promises to hand over the prized Spektor decoding machine if Bond aids her defection. Bond suspects a trap but can’t resist the opportunity to give the British the upper hand in a chilling new front of the Cold War.

So begins a deadly game of bluff and double bluff, with Bond a marked man as he enters the murky world of Balkan espionage.

The best Bond novel in the series (in book chronicle order) so far. I can if you saw the film it is full of tension and well written. I believe that it was John F Kennedy’s favourite too. Bond really comes alive here and Ian Fleming has written perhaps his best Bond novel also.
I recommend anyone to read or listen to them in order as I am doing. Very rewarding and well narrated.

It’s a great story, perfect length. The narration by Mark Gatiss elevates it even higher. Highly recommended

Great story, excellent narration

Why would you voice Bond like a Glasweigian Rebus meets Batman type. Yes Fleming added in at a later date some Scottish ancestry due to Connerys success, but why play the character as a gruff morose Scot?? Play safe and go with English. I mean Connerys accent is fairly unique in itself. Sorry to go on, but I couldn't immerse myself in one of my favourite Bond books because of this. And irritatingly all the other characters were voiced superbly.

Great narration...apart from Bond

Listening to Mark Gatiss was a true joy, especially how he managed the various languages and accents. The story itself didn't impress me nearly as much, and Bond not nearly as clever as he's in the films.

Mark Gatiss' reading is superb

Brilliant narration from Mark but as this was my first Ian Fleming book (like many I only know his work via films) I thought the story was weak and didn’t make Bond out to be that good. Then again thinking about when it was written the idea that a meeting a beautiful women was enough for you to lose all sense of what’s right/wrong seems now to be old fashioned now.
