Meg Tallmadge is a veterinarian at a clinic in Laramie, Wyoming. She’s got a great job, great friends, deep ties to the family ranch, and big plans for her vet future. Sure, there are bumps in the road, like her mom’s continued denial about who Meg is and her painful and infuriating attempts to make Meg a “proper” woman. Then there’s Meg’s recent breakup with a girlfriend, which has her wondering why she can’t seem to open up to relationships. But Meg knows that life is messy, and sometimes all you can do is get through and shake it off. What she can’t seem to shake off, however, is her past.

It’s been almost 10 years to the day since she met the love of her life, and about eight since she let her go. Meg has a hard time admitting that maybe she didn’t really let go, and that maybe some things you never really get over, no matter how hard you try. But her past is half a world away, caught up in her own life, relationship, and journalism career, and Meg isn’t one to chase the ghosts of past relationships. Even if they send you a birthday card and nudge what you thought were the closed-off parts of your heart. After all, second chances are the stuff of fantasies and movies where the good guy always gets a happy ending. You can’t count on something like that.

Or can you?

Sometimes difficult to tell which of the 2 main characters were which as both had very similar voices but overall, very good xxx

Very good book xxx

This book had me in floods of tears in many places and hoping against hope that it would turn out really happy.
It reminded me of my childhood and my cowgirl outfits that my Dad bought me, my bone handled pistols that were the envy of all my friends and my fringed letter jacket!! It is a marvellous book I thoroughly recommend it.

One of the best books I have listened to!!

Two fantastically written books. I love the characters and everything else in these stories.

Absolutely awesome!

Ok, I don't normally write reviews, but I had to mention something here..
This is actually a bundle of 2 books, the first (From the Boots Up) being about 4 hours long, and the second (From the Hat Down) around 12 hours...
Thankfully I had paid attention to the fact that Abby Craden is one of the narrators, she performs the second story.
Had it not been for that fact, I would have given up on the whole thing very quickly!
The reason?... Paige McKinney, who narrates the first story, has one of the most annoying performance styles I've come across.
Her voice is all singsongy and lilts up and down and is far too chirpy for the text she is reading a lot of the time. It's a voice suited to reading to a group of kids, not the voice I want to hear performing a adult lesbian romance novel!
To my annoyance I see Paige McKinney has narrated quite a few lesfic novels (really???... I mean... REALLY???!!!)
I will now actively avoid these!

Abby Craden on the other hand is a master of her craft. She could read the IKEA catalogue and still do all the voices and make it sound sexy!

So please, I urge you, grit your teeth and put up with the performance of the first (thankfully shorter) story, and be utterly soothed by the luscious second.
It's a lovely tale of two young women falling in love in Book One.. and how circumstances alter as time goes on and we revisit where they're at a decade later in Book Two and find that life has thrown them a few stumbling blocks.
Enjoy... I did!
And I will definitely seek out more work by the author, Andi Marquette.

Suffer the Boots, be soothed by the Hat!

I really enjoyed this book for its gentleness despite the topics of homophobia and racism it included. The main and support characters were equally ‘good’ (excluding a-holes mentioned above of course) and it made for plenty of smiles and satisfied sighs.

Perhaps I’ve made this sound a bit pedestrian but if you enjoy a great romance this is one to go for.

Gently romantic
