About this listen

Stop guessing. Start communicating. Your ability to protect your family shouldn't depend on a cell phone signal bar.

You bought GMRS radios for peace of mind, family trips, overlanding, property comms, and “what if” moments.

But right now? The range disappoints, the manual is confusing, and you’re never quite sure what button to press... or what to say.

GMRS Radios: The Visual Command System is a practical, step-by-step field manual built for real life. Just the essential skills to turn your radios into a simple, reliable communications plan.

Inside, you’ll learn how to:

  • Get legal fast: understand GMRS rules and the FCC license without the headache
  • Use plain language confidently: skip confusing 10-codes and communicate clearly under stress
  • Build a Family PACE plan: Primary / Alternate / Contingency / Emergency—so everyone knows what to do
  • Program repeaters correctly: offsets, tones, and the settings that unlock dramatically better coverage (terrain dependent)
  • Understand CTCSS/DCS “privacy tones”: what they do, what they don’t, and how to set them up
  • Beat “mic freeze”: three glovebox-ready scripts for help, meetups, and convoy coordination
  • Improve real-world range: antennas, line-of-sight, power basics, and the truth behind “35-mile” packaging
  • Set up a clean mobile install: practical guidance for vehicle comms without guesswork
  • Monitor weather and scan smart: stay ahead of changing conditions on the road or trail
  • Run the 15-minute monthly “Driveway Drill”: a simple routine that keeps batteries charged and skills sharp

Perfect for: Tactical dads, overlanders, campers, families, small teams, and anyone who wants reliable short-range comms... without becoming a radio engineer.

Your family’s ability to coordinate shouldn’t depend on a cell signal.

You already have the radios; now turn them into a system.

I got this listen as we are planning on doing a family hike and want to have ways to communicate should we get separated or explore different sections. The explanations of the difference between cheap radios that bolster high wattage or amps is easily explained with easy to follow analogies like what good is having a ton of water pressure if you have a regular home hose and point it at a wall, the additional water pressure doesn't penetrate the wall, those are the kids of analogies that will help you learn how to purchase the right equipment, learn about how to overcome obstacles (even the earth curvature) and how to gain the visual that is needed for the signals to work. It also explains the licensing options, what channels make sense for your situation and all legal compliance requirements.

The GMRS Radio Field Manual by Morse Code Publishing is dead easy to follow and properly practical. It’s laid out in a clean way, so you can dip in when you need to, not get lost in a wall of tech talk. I liked how it keeps things realistic about range and why your radio might not reach as far as you hoped, like when terrain and obstacles get in the way. That bit alone saves you loads of frustration.
Overall, it’s a handy guide for getting set up, staying clear on the air, and actually using GMRS the way most people need it.

I bought this because I was tired of watching random videos and still feeling confused. I wanted something I could follow step by step without feeling dumb. This helped way more than I expected. I liked how practical everything felt, especially when setting things up myself. I actually understood what I was doing instead of just copying steps.

I picked this up to improve how our group uses radios during outdoor trips and local events. What I liked most was how direct and usable it felt. The instructions are clear, and the visual elements really helped me understand the setup process without second-guessing myself. I was able to streamline our communication plan in one weekend. It’s focused on real-world use, which makes it far more helpful than most technical manuals I’ve seen.

What I appreciated most is how hands on it feels. Instead of abstract concepts, it focuses on building a reliable communication setup for real world use, including off grid situations. It comes across less as a casual hobby book and more as a solid guide for anyone serious about staying connected when it truly counts.
