Continuing the saga of the bestselling game series! In the third of three official tie-in novels to the hugely successful videogame from Microsoft and Epic Games, Marcus Fenix and his Gears defend humanity’s final city from the Locust horde.

With the Locust Horde apparently destroyed, Jacinto’s survivors have begun to rebuild human society on the Locust stronghold. Raiding pirate gangs take a toll—but it’s nothing that Marcus Fenix and the Gears can’t handle. Then the nightmare they thought they’d left behind begins to stalk them again. Something far worse, something even the Locust dreaded, has emerged to spread across the planet, and not even this remote island haven is beyond its reach. Gears and Stranded must fight side by side to survive their deadliest enemy yet, falling back on the savage tactics of another bloody siege—Anvil Gate.

Gives an excellent insight into different parts of the world and builds upon areas only spoken of briefly in previous installments. Learn to love the gritty Adam Fenix in his army days, Hoffman in his career defining battle and the struggles of war all round. A brilliant depiction of the Pendulum wars and the Locust war. I have listened and read this piece multiple times and I believe you will too.

world building and truly gripping

An enjoyable read, though perhaps my least favourite of the first three. Well narrated, with Nan McNamara getting to grips with the Antipodean ‘South Islands’ accents, with great coverage over a number of characters.

The story helps plug the gap left between Gears 2 and 3. I’ve always felt the beginning of Gears 3 rushes a lot of exposition and assumes you’ve read the books, which is a shame, but it does mean the written material is great for fans of the series.

As with previous titles, the book is split in two: a present day storyline, as well as a flashback, this time from the POV of Colonel Hoffman. This time around, I found the present day storyline a bit dull, and preferred the flashback chapters.

Overall, an enjoyable read, which I’d recommend to hardcore fans of the Gears franchise 👍🏻

Interesting bridge between Gears 2 and 3 for fans of the games
