About this listen

How much do we really know about Michelangelo? Conflicting viewpoints and much confusion surround many aspects of the Renaissance artist's life and art; myth and legend so envelop him that he sometimes seems more like a caricature than a complete human being. Despite a familiarity with some of his works, aspects of Michelangelo's art and life remain open to interpretation.

In The Genius of Michelangelo, internationally recognized Michelangelo expert and award-winning Professor of Art History William E. Wallace gives you a comprehensive perspective on one of history's greatest artists, unavailable in any other course. Drawing on a vast command of artistic knowledge and period detail, these 36 intellectually rewarding and dazzling lectures explore the relationship between truth and legend to reveal a groundbreaking new picture of Michelangelo as an artist, a businessman, an aristocrat, and a genius.

After listening to this course I feel like I have met Michelangelo in real life. The course allowed me to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge about this outstanding and complex historical character. A great inspiration!

The author, through his engaging and passionate narration, it allows us to have a glimpse in Michelangelo’s long artistic and personal life. I thought it will be a long lecture, but it has been the book I finished the faster on Audible. Now I can’t wait to return to Italy and see the masterpieces created by the genius of Michelangelo.

It does exactly what it says on the tin: another great lecture from “The Great Courses”!

I listened to this while in Rome after learning much of the base context of Michelangelo's work. These lectures have great insight and unique perspectives, well structured and learned a lot from this enthusiastic speaker

Reads like a great biography

William E. Wallace clearly loves Michelangelo, and now so do I.
The enormous, detailed erudition of these lectures is exceeded only by the warmth & enthusiasm with which the life and work of Michelangelo are explored. Renaissance Italy is evoked vividly and great sensitivity of appreciation is focused throughout on the artist and the art.
It would have been great if the images that accompanied the original lectures were included as a pdf, but the eloquence with which they’re described does much to make up for their absence.

Erudite, absorbing and fun

Thorough retelling of artists work, life and legacy. Audio clips and an extensive PDF guide augment audio well.

I started out with little to no knowledge of Michelangelo. It’s fair to say that 18 hours later that is no longer true! I bought Wallace’s accompanying illustrated book of the Michelangelo’s Complete Works which allowed me to see the artworks while listening to the lectures. The series was well paced, educational, and the lecturer is clearly wildly enthusiastic and tremendously informed. I felt oddly grateful to access so much distilled knowledge on the maestro. I have loved this series (as all great courses I’ve completed). Truly wonderful, I will miss my regular 30 minutes with William Wallace on Michelangelo. I shall raise a glass of fizzy Bolognese red wine in his honour!

Incredible series on Michelangelo
