What’s holding you back?

Self-defeating behavior is the #1 reason that people seek psychotherapy. Whether it’s envy, compulsion, inaction, holding a grudge, or not moving on, so many of our biggest stumbling blocks are self-imposed, preventing us from achieving the happiness, love, and success we all want in our lives. The good news is: We can do better.

Get Out of Your Own Way explains why we sabotage ourselves and offers proven steps of action to transform behavior from self-defeating to life-enhancing. With anecdotes and usable insights drawn from decades of clinical practice, Dr. Mark Goulston shares ideas that have helped thousands of patients overcome pain, fear, and frustration to approach life’s challenges with dignity, courage, and even humor.

At first I did think this was no good for me because it is very, very basic. But then I remembered the amount of times I’ve wanted to recommend a resource to someone but all the ones I know of are too advanced. Sometimes people need something that will initiate the self-awareness, before they can delve into solutions. I run a rehab programme and this is going straight into their reading list.

Also, I did get a couple of things out of it personally too, because non of us are fully aware of everything. There’s always another little layer to peel.

So yeah, for people who already learn about themselves and psychology and growth, this is very, very basic, yet with a few nuggets for anyone because he covers such a broad amount. But for anyone just beginning to self-investigate etc, this is great.

Excellent for very basic overview

I liked the fact the 38 chapters deal with a different self defeating behaviour and was heartened to see that I didn’t have them all. Also as I read this book slowly over a period of months and worked on myself I realised that I was no longer getting in my own way in some of the ways I had done initially and that as I worked in the test they were beginning to disappear.

I’m going to write these behaviours down in a list and keep them near my desk for easy reference when I get stuck so I’m aware and can do something about it in the moment.

I appreciate the anecdotes in the book as they helped me see that almost anyone anywhere can experience any and all of these self defeating behaviours and they can be overcome.

The reading is pleasant and the voice clear and bright I enjoyed listening even though this challenges some very deep seated behaviours.

Good Book With Plenty of Helpful Anecdotes
