JB seems very ahead of his time detailing the struggle of a gay man to accept his reality, and the damage he does to those who love him, his lover Giovanni and his fiancee Helle. Each end up bitterly rejecting him in the end.

It’s also a scathing portrait of Americans abroad as these selfish children who are merely playing or toying with other people’s lives.

Apart from a short authorial interjection strongly against men who dress as women and take on their airs and mannerisms, the book feels as if it has not aged at all since its publication,

I don’t actually think I can put into words what an incredible book this was. It’s not long, and yet you find yourself becoming so invested in each individual character, even the ones you don’t like (when I catch you, Guillaume.)

The exploration of bisexuality, and sexuality in general was so interesting, and Baldwin manages to escape the trap of falling into mouth piece characters, they felt so real I wanted to reach in and grab them (and shake them by the shoulder)

Very rarely does a book live up to such high expectations.

Incredibly well written. Believable characters illustrating the hard reality of emotional physical and sexual struggle. It is written so that one understands David whilst also not envying his position and at times judging him, The reader is very good

Gut wrenching but so so BEAUTIFUL. This is my first introduction to Baldwin's work and my god is it clear why his name and his work continues to be spoken about with such reverence. This is tale of a man denying who he is and the turmoil that causes in the life of those around him... Just beautiful.
