Students are found as though turned to stone... Dobby's sinister predictions seem to be coming true.

©1997 J.K. Rowling (P)2025 Pottermore LimitedI was sceptical before I listened to the first one but honestly I much prefer these versions. Cush Jumbo is a brilliant narrator and she doesn’t have to waste time putting on voices because there is an incredible cast to do that. Dobby is great and I didn’t think anyone could do Lockhart but wow! Kit Harrington is fantastic. I LOVE the Dolby Atmos, it adds so much depth and wonder.
I do agree that Snape is trying way too hard and I’m not mad on him. Madam Pomfrey doesn’t scan well for me either. But everything else is absolutely stellar! I’m on my second listening. Bring on the rest of the series!!!
Finally! The production I’ve been waiting for

Some castings are perfect. The children are brilliant. Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore is genius. Kit Harrington as Lockhart is fantastic, the fact that the Weasley family have Devonshire accents is a stroke of brilliance - a detail that hasn't gone unnoticed. Bravo casting director.
There is other standout voice work from the actors who play Dobby, Oliver Wood and the narrator. I could go on..
But, Riz Ahmed as Snape is a horrible choice. Such a pivotal character in the series and I feel they got it completely wrong. I understand that they didn't want to replicate Alan Rickman's performance, but Riz's voice acting is awful. Some very strange, frankly amateur delivery of lines. He sounds weak. I hope that as the character develops through the series, so does his voice acting. Perhaps I'm too critical?
Also, the direction of this series is mostly great, but sometimes the lines are delivered almost as in slow motion. It's like they've told the actor to adjust their pronunciation to make things more clear, but this has unfortunately given the effect that some of the characters sound unnatural. Their speech doesn't feel organic.
Overall, I like this series, but for me, it hasn't surpassed Stephen Fry's version, even with all of the production that has gone into this one. That being said, I've pre-ordered the whole series, and I will be looking forward to the release of the other books.
A conflicted review. The casting director has done well.. mostly.
