“Wait Till Your Father Gets Home”

Somers just wants to take a nap on his birthday. This story takes place before Domestic Animals.

“Responsible Adults”

Hazard and Somers chaperone a school dance. This story takes place before Father Complex.

John-Henry Somerset and Emery Hazard are two of my favorite literary characters. I have enjoyed numerous of their books – written by Gregory Ashe – and was happy to grab these vignettes put in a collection.

I’ll start my review by discussing Tristan James. His narration is always pure perfection and this group of stories is no exception. Hazard is jaded by life and tender with his partner John-Henry and their daughter Evie. John-Henry is cheerful and managing his chosen life partner while balancing the chaos in their lives – including Colt, their new foster son. As usual, Tristan does an amazing job and adore him as a narrator.

Off to the stories!

Hazard’s adventure in trying to obtain the perfect toy for Evie’s birthday was a hoot. Only Emery could return from a quest bruised and battered. His love for Evie was so clear all while he’s caught in the middle of an ongoing crime.

Colt is their new foster son, but he’s constantly getting into scrapes. His friend Ashley is also often involved and sometimes even Evie gets pulled in. I winced a lot at the damage, but also enjoyed watching Colt settle in.

The shenanigans of Colt continue on when Somers wants a nap. Again, more laughter on my part as I enjoyed the interactions between John-Henry and his new foster son.

Who knew chaperoning a dance could be so chaotic? More hilarity ensues as Emery and John-Henry navigate corralling teenagers – always something very challenging.

Another scavenger hunt on Emery’s birthday had me laughing. He claims to not enjoy these hunts, but he also sinks into it and plays along – especially with Colt coaxing him to participate. A lovely story.

This collection of vignettes was enjoyable and, as always, I appreciated the work involved in writing them. I had sort of wondered if this series might be coming to an end, but with a new arrival in Wuareda, it looks like things aren’t finished yet…

Oops, they did it again!

I read the ebook a couple of years ago, which I really liked, but listening to the stories gives them another dimension, which I really loved. Tristan James really captures both the characters of Hazard and Somerset, as well as their dynamic and their growing band of family and friends.

The series of shorts is behind the scenes, where have an opportunity to see how Hazard and Somerset try to live an ordinary life and maintain a relationship within the chaos that all too often is their life. We get to see that both are multi-faceted, can have fun and serious moments, and that they value the people around them.

Gregory Ashe, manages to get me to feel many of their emotions, and I admit to laughing out loud and having tears in my eyes.

A great listen.
