Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil.

He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

After cementing itself as one of the best-rated serial novels on Royal Road with an astonishing 13 million views, He Who Fights with Monsters is now brought to you in professionally formatted audio.

To give a little background: He Who Fights With Monsters is an ongoing webnovel (or series... I'm not sure of the correct term), and this is the first 113 chapters of that novel.

Heath Miller does an excellent job of narration, including the readings of the various abilities and other pop-ups the main character, Jason Asano, gets during his adventures in a new world. If I had one, minor complaint, it's that sometimes these pop-ups create run-on segments that are hard to listen to; they work better in a visual format.

For the story itself - your mileage may vary, but for me it's an engaging exploration of a new world with magic and monsters. Itsmain flaw comes from its roots as a webnovel - several times, a concept or event covered in one chapter will be re-explained in a later chapter, sometimes even in the next chapter. As long as you can put up with that happening from time to time, it's a fun listen :D

Excellent audiobook version of the first arc

While not strictly the best book or plot in the world, it had me laughing out loud and smiling constantly. The main character is someone I would genuinely like to meet at buy a drink. Most litrpg tends to be shameless power fantasies often surrounding objectively terrible people, however Jason is not so much a white screen to project the readers wish fulfilment on to but instead comes across as a genuine person in his own right who I personally would like to have a beer with.

I want to be friends with the main character.

After lots of hesitation I finally decided to spend a credit on this book. After previously listening to Peter Kenny in the Witcher series and then again with the royal institute of magic series, it took a great leap of faith and numerous book reviews for me to finally decide to get this book.
I must say the samples you are able to listen to before purchasing doesn't do this book any favours at all.
So having taken the lead of faith and bought this book I read bordering on regret in the first 10 minutes as the narrator doesn't have the same quality narration as Peter Kenny. I did however stock with it as I listen to audible books on my commute to and from work. after numerous rewinding to make sure I kept up with what was a bit boring in the beginning of suddenly got interesting and the book came to life, in a very sudden and interesting way. Jason the main protagonist was at his wits end and has what can only be described as a personally deserving of a beating or shovel in the face, which he received plenty of early on, to the point of me going from this mouth is going to get him killed, to how has he not been killed yet with the mouth he has, to ultimately thinking that he's not just mouthing off for no reason and he has thoughts and intelligence surrounding his comments.
After that I must say the book has been great, with the narration proving to get better as the book progressed. don't get me wrong, there were still the odd occasion where the narrator went monotone and a bit boring, but by and large he kept on point with the humour and story really turned up a notch. there were multiple times I would burst out laughing in the car.
The storyline of the first book was as good as it gets for an introduction into an open world audio book series and I will most probably listen to this book again because I imagine I will finish book two before my next credit.
I live the way each character is carefully described and their voices are distinctly different most of the time, although sometimes it can be a bit tricky to discern which is where the 'Jason said' quotes come in handy. This book doesn't take any prisoners with its gore and isn't for the faint hearted, and at the same time it can be very heart warming, fun, comical, serious, and very much like today's political society in some ways. Bringing a bit more realism into the story. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to continue with book two and complete the set. I noticed another book was released this month and my only concern now is that I'm going to get to the last book within 6 months, I wonder if the series will be finished by then, and how long it will go on for. regardless I'm really excited to listen on this journey.
I would like to add one more thing, listening to audible books right now feels so much better than watching whatever site or movie is on TV as I get like the descriptions and emphasis on the environment is more pronounced and vivid, and more expansive than what is shown in TV.
overall great book and if you are like me and hesitated due to the less than convincing sample, hesitate no further and great assured you're buying a great book to start a great series you won't want to put down.

Get through the first 10 minutes and you're good
