About this listen
Selected as one of Audible's best audiobooks of 2021
Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters.
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil.
He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.
After cementing itself as one of the best-rated serial novels on Royal Road with an astonishing 13 million views, He Who Fights with Monsters is now brought to you in professionally formatted audio.

This is the best LitRPG I've ever read/listened to.
But it's not typical LitRPG.
First off, there is immense focus on giving the characters depth. Not in the overused "character development arcs", but in the little interactions, mistakes, lessons learned, and lessons they fail to learn. Some other reviewer said the characters were 4D. Yes, they are, and it's rare in the fantasy genre. It'll take a while to get there, but you'll see a kaleidoscope of who the main characters were, who they are, and who they could be. I think the reason you get that is because there's emphasis on consistency, and them acting according to their nature.
Secondly, this story starts off slow. It builds up the conflict piece by piece. The story's scope is bigger than the first 2-3 books will show you. That said, book 1 still showcases some politics, drama and good-natured humour. It will tie up most of the conflict, but not all.
The gaming gimmicks (system messages) will thin out in time. There are good in-world reasons why they exist, but they're not the focus of the story at all.
You can safely ignore the few numbers that do come up. The rank percentages are a bit annoying sometimes (they don't come up a lot), but I think that's an issue with the audiobook. They really don't matter and are easier to skim in the e-book. Persevere. It's worth it.
Book 1 is quite wholesome. Book 2 is a bit heavy on abilities. Later books can go for many more chapters without a single ability or gaming prompt. A few arcs in the middle can be a bit grim.
What you should also be prepared for is that the story is in the style show-first-explain-much-later. You'll sometimes be confused by things happening contrary to your expectations, and left to wonder about them for a while. (although I still can't get over the blue glow surprise in book 1).
If you're unsure about this because it's LitRPG and you don't like the genre, this is probably a good book to go for.
If you love LitRPG, keep in mind that this doesn't focus nearly as much on fighting. It'll scratch your power fantasy itch, but when the main character dominates and when he falls short is harder to predict.
There's an arc in later books that will get quite heavy emotionally. There's wholesome stuff, but there are also dark arcs. I personally love the wide range of experiences that the main character is put through.
Expect to get book 2 if you finish this one. The story doesn't end here. For the parts that aren't released on Audible yet, you can find them on RoyalRoad/Patreon. Chapters are posted pretty much daily. Yeah the editorial quality suffers from releasing chapters daily, but the soul is still there. Or you can wait for the books to be released officially. I'd personally recommend jumping right in.
Wholesome, nuanced LitRPG
