About this listen

The discovery of a severed head in a golf course bunker triggers a frantic race to find a serial killer that brings the town of Burnham-on-Sea to a standstill.

A connection is made with a series of unsolved murders harking back to the 1970s, and Detective Inspector Nick Dixon finds himself caught in a race against time that takes him the length and breadth of the country.

The brutal killing of an elderly man raises the stakes and, as he closes in, Dixon begins to question whether he is chasing one serial killer or two.

Head in the Sand is the second novel in the highly acclaimed DI Nick Dixon Crime Series.

Revised edition: This edition of Head in the Sand includes editorial revisions.

Critic reviews

“Surprisingly, the figure of speech is literal, blazingly so. Author Damien Boyd gives Avon and Somerset Police Detective Inspector Nick Dixon a massively convoluted, crimes-in-different-eras, gritty noirish case to unravel”Mallory Heart Reviews

“I was full of anticipation ahead of reading the second book, and I am pleased to report it didn’t disappoint. The characters from the first book are well developed”Literary Week

Head in the Sand is another thrilling crime fiction by Damien Boyd. It’s a MUST READ for those who like crime fiction. It’s a quick read, very fast-paced, quite graphic, and involves a very great detective”The Blacksheep Project

Looks like Damien Boyd is fast becoming my new go to detective writer and Simon Mattacks a favourite performer with his clear, silky voice, well modulated delivery and each character individually and expertly voiced.

This is the second book in this series and I find myself enjoying the likeable characters along with the storylines, these stories are clean and crisp and although they are not overly long I don’t feel like there are any gaps.

The narrator is easy to listen to with a pleasant voice and good delivery.

Just discovered Damien Boyd through his new book featuring DI Bob Willis and have been familiarising myself with the DI Nick Dixon books now. i love the plots but not too keen on the protagonist, bit arrogant and self important, women seem to be portrayed as weak and a bit silly, think they've been given a better deal over the last ten years since these were written.

loved it

I’ve really enjoyed Head in The Sand. It has a really good storyline, that has lots of twists and turns, keeping you hooked from start to finish.

DI Nick Dixon is a brilliant character. Supported by a cast of police officers we’ve heard from in the first book.

I like how Nick sometimes steps outside usual police procedures. You also get an insight into his personal life as well as his work life. I found the ending particularly clever, once again lots of twists right up to the end.

The audiobook is expertly narrated by Simon Mattacks. He brings to life all of Damien Boyd’s characters.

I wish the story was longer, which shows how much I’ve enjoyed it. I have already started the next audiobook in the DI Nick Dixon series.

Absolutely Brilliant!!!

A well written narrative, believe but somewhat predictable ending. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Well crafted plot
