About this listen

Cainnech (Cain) MacPherson's hatred for the English was born when he was a lad of seven, the day they raided his village and killed his family. They took everything from him without mercy and tossed him onto the battlefield, where the memory of love faded to dust and left nothing in its wake but violence. Now, as Robert the Bruce's most formidable, most lethal warrior, he wreaks havoc on his enemy, taking land by force and without mercy. But when he raids a small castle in Northumberland, he faces his greatest opponent yet - a bold, beautiful Norman lass who will see him dead at any cost rather than give up her home...even if it means tearing open his armored heart and stirring the ashes that remain.

Aleysia d'Argentan will do anything to keep the hated Scots out of her castle and away from her villagers. She has prepared for this day for the last four years, building traps in the forest, poisoning the grain, and hiding daggers wherever she could use them to kill her enemy. But she isn't prepared for the brawny, brooding Highland warlord who invades her life - and her heart. He is an infuriating, irresistible opponent with a curious touch, a smoldering kiss, and a reluctant smile that begins to shine on her alone. Can the ashes of his heart be stirred into flame by his enemy?

Contains mature themes.

Really enjoyed this story with a strong female protagonist. The narrator was new to me but feel that he should be employed wherever a good Scottish accent is required. Only small niggle is that every narrator seems to pronounce plait as plate which is not correct in English and presumably Scottish as well!
Good secondary stories but would like to know what happened to the minor characters met in the Abbey and the vicious Abbess.
Good enjoyable listen and sufficient historic accuracies to not make me cringe.

Great story, perfect narrator

Loved every minute of it. This is the first book I've listened to by Paula Quinn and it won't be the last but unfortunately there are only another 2 of this series and any of her other books on audio.
I loved the Scottish narrator, he has a very nice voice and narrates the female voices very well also. This is also the first time listening to this narrator and it won't be the last. I will look for more books narrated by him. I love his Scottish accent and his voice is very soft and sexy for the hero.
now in to the next one.

loved it

Great story but not a good Scottish accent at all. As a Scottish family even my kids came in to kitchen and said “that’s horrific”. If you weren’t Scottish this is what you’ll accept but it’s horrific to Scots to listen to. Great story though.

Great piece

This was all kinds of wonderful.

Firstly, the narrator deserves more than 5* he was brilliant with all the voices, accents, intonations & characterisations...

The story in of itself was really good, I loved both the MCs (usually, it's one or the other or dislike for one of them), they were both brave, badass, sweet, loving, caring & lovable!

At long last a heroine who is both intelligent & smart... who doesn't make stupid decisions, faints every 5 seconds or thinks she can go into a battle/fight without ANY training or knowledge & ends up being more hindrance than anything else.

I did dislike Richard as he ended up being far too obtuse & kept causing problems!

I was rooting for William to get together with Julianna, but after her actions... I'm saddened that she does become his love interest in his book... I think Matty should've been endgame for him... she loved him when he was poor, without family, without a name & a servant!

Robert the Bruce in this book is neither a good nor loyal man... what a way to repay one of his most trusted warriors & he should've granted Cain as well as Nicholas titles & land at the very least.

After all that they all went through for the land, I can't say that I loved the ending... I think there could've been a better outcome & the ending was very abrupt as well!

Still, it was a fantastic book!

a wonderful tale
