About this listen

In Joseph Conrad's classic Heart of Darkness, Marlow is a steamboat captain working on the Congo River for a Belgian trading company. Marlow is asked to retrieve Kurtz, a legendary ivory trader who has lost contact with the home office and may have fallen ill. During the expedition Marlow is struck by the Company's mistreatment of the Congo natives. When Marlow arrives at Kurtz's station, he discovers that Kurtz has set himself up as a sort of god to the natives he had once wanted to civilize. Just before he dies Kurtz experiences a moment of clarity and speaks his final words: "The horror! The horror!"Public Domain (P)2008 Alpha DVD LLC Classics Africa

I enjoyed this book, and appreciate to some extent the story and the different levels it works on with respect to its comments on human nature, morals and Imperialism, but it did not quite work for me. I think it was a little confusing in places as to what is happening, but that may have been because I was driving at the time and could not give the book the full attention it deserved because of my natural instinct for survival! I think in front of an open fire in my evening jacket and slippers, with Port and a pipe and my undivided attention, I could have made more of it and it would have got 4 stars.

Enjoyed but not as hoped.

Hard to finish this audiobook due to poor narration. The story is very descriptive and the narrator's accent was an obstacle to understanding what was actually happening.

Difficult to follow
