About this listen

Hidden by London’s wealth, energy and need for cheap labour, the city’s immigrant population is powerless, despised and often illegal. So when a young woman’s body is discovered on Hampstead Heath one cold morning, she could be anyone...Rich or poor, outsider or insider, five strangers are connected in undreamed-of ways as greed, courage, murder and kindness link their lives. Polly Noble, a human rights lawyer and single mother, knows more than most how easily people fall into the abyss of London’s underworld.

I almost didn't bother with this book, I'd started reading it on my kindle and found some of the content so disturbing that I didn't want to carry on, but I did what I always do if I think something might be worth a second go and I downloaded the audio version.

How fortunate for me!

The book is a triumph and the performance that Sian Thomas gives us is incredible.
There are so many different characters in this book and Sian manages to give each of them their own voice, perfectly. It's read in a beautifully, unhurried way and I really enjoyed this book, although it does highlight just how awful humans often are to one another.
It's well written, well rounded and totally believable.
Do yourself a favour and listen to it.

An Incredibly Written, Thought Provoking Book!

A compelling story and interesting examination of what one area of London can be to people from different walks of life, from different backgrounds, cultures and wealth.

Compelling

What a great listen. The narrator couldn't have been bettered, her firm yet understanding voice was perfect for the story.
Though it had some unsettling moments the whole book was a pleasure to listen to with no chapters where I started to lose interest, which is often the case.
It cleverly covered an array of social issues and I would have happily listened to more.

This was really great to listen to because it was read so well and all the characters brought alive.
A thought provoking story which was very well plotted right up to the end. No spoiler but the ending more realistic than idealistic which was more satisfying.

An excellent book

Topical / true/ intricately interwoven characters
Non judgmental and intriguing presentation of the juxtaposition between rich and poor and all that lies between.
