About this listen

This magnificent biography of Henry VIII is set against the cultural, social and political background of his court - the most spectacular court ever seen in England - and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces.

An entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence but also a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history.

As well as challenging some recent theories, it offers controversial new conclusions based on contemporary evidence that has until now been overlooked. This is a triumph of historical writing which will appeal equally to the general listener and the serious historian.

The length of this book may seem intimidating, but in fact it’s incredibly manageable in audiobook form and I enjoyed dipping in and out of it. Weir’s sense detail is fascinating and gives an excellent insight into parts of the Tudor court often ignored or dismissed by other historians for lack of time or interest (the rules of accommodation, for example.) This is an invaluable resource for anyone who is interested in a broad, yet also detailed overview of the entire reign of Henry, with the essential characters given their due. I would consider it a jumping off point for any historian or casual reader to then read smaller biographies of those courtiers/royals who most grabbed their interest. Phyllida Nash’s narration is clear and interesting.

Excellent broad strokes depiction of the life of Henry VIII and his courtiers
