Summary

A defense attorney is prepared to play. But is she a pawn in a master’s deadly match? A twisting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni.

Keera Duggan was building a solid reputation as a Seattle prosecutor, until her romantic relationship with a senior colleague ended badly. For the competitive former chess prodigy, returning to her family’s failing criminal defense law firm to work for her father is the best shot she has. With the right moves, she hopes to restore the family’s reputation, her relationship with her father, and her career.

Keera’s chance to play in the big leagues comes when she’s retained by Vince LaRussa, an investment adviser accused of murdering his wealthy wife. There’s little hard evidence against him, but considering the couple’s impending and potentially nasty divorce, LaRussa faces life in prison. The prosecutor is equally challenging: Miller Ambrose, Keera’s former lover, who’s eager to destroy her in court on her first homicide defense.

As Keera and her team follow the evidence, they uncover a complicated and deadly game that’s more than Keera bargained for. When shocking information turns the case upside down, Keera must decide between her duty to her client, her family’s legacy, and her own future.

Critic reviews

“Fast-paced legal-intrigue gold that could be improved only by kicking off a new series.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Twist-filled.…John Grisham fans will be pleased.”Publishers Weekly

“One of the best puzzle books ever! I raced through the pages, which are packed full of compelling characters and taut gamesmanship, desperate to learn the answer to this extraordinary thriller, which is both whodunit and how-dunit. I would follow Robert Dugoni anywhere.”—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Good evening if not as good as the Tracy Crosswhite series.
Spoiler alert
It’s well structured even if the opening chapter leaves you wanting until the big reveal. My only big complaint is that after the verdict the lack of protection of LB is out of character with a professional police force. If they were watching some places or people as they said they did LB would have been the first person to watch and protect. It does not make sense that she was not.
I will still read the next book in the series and see where it goes.

A good if ultimately flawed legal thriller

Another fine book from Dugoni. I absolutely love his Tracey Crosswhite books, as soon as I’ve read one I’m waiting for the next.

Love this author.

What an absolutely fascinating and intriguing story. These characters were so complex and had me guessing from the first page to the last. The way the story unfolds was genius. I liked that we got to hear about a few characters from the Tracey Crosswhite series too. It made it feel familiar even if the others were not as well known. I wasn’t sure until the end how it would unfold and didn’t see it ending the way it did. All I can say is read and listen to it and you’ll understand. Great narration as always.

Amazing book.
