Summary
One hidden crush. One bunch of plastic mistletoe. One alcohol-fueled kiss. One set of taillights as Max Martino left town. Sixteen years later…
Sam Addison hates change, and his company's new merger is stretching him to his limit. When Sam finds out an older, hotter, and amazingly talented Max Martino is part of the acquisition, he knows the only way to keep his sanity is to avoid Max—and their history—at any cost.
Max never planned to settle down, but recently he's been pining for roots. A new job, a new city, and a second chance with Sam makes the thought of staying in one place exciting for the first time ever. But the harder Max pushes, the farther Sam runs, sometimes literally, and Max begins to wonder if Sam can ever let go of the biggest mistake Max ever made—leaving.
But maybe a second chance at forever is as simple as holding the door open for love.
Hold the Door is an 80,000-word contemporary romance that features friends to lovers and a second chance at love, a sassy work husband, and surfing lessons that often lead to more. Hold the Door is the first book in the Open Doors series and can be listened to as a standalone.

Enter surfing. Yep – surfing. With Sam giving Max lessons, all kinds of barriers fall away. The men rediscover their friendship. They start to forge a new path forward. But, once again, a misunderstanding threatens to derail everything. So the question is – what lessons have they learned from the past? Well, you’ll have to listen to find out! I will say I love the work husband and the older surfer guy and can’t wait to read the next book.
Okay, narrator! I’ve heard Danny Holt before and I have to say he’s good. His job on this audio was amazing as he gave Max and Sam two very distinct voices. I enjoyed the narration and I won’t hesitate to pick up another audio by him. I enjoyed this one!

Sam and Max were in school sixteen years ago when an action by Sam started a big misunderstanding between them. Then sixteen years later circumstances bring them back together and the fun starts.
Sam tries hiding from Max but when things cause them to reunite the whole situation changes and both of their guilt feelings get exchanged and discussed. The path they take is fun. The audio really brings these characters to life. Danny Holt’s voice is perfect for these guys.
Fun hide and seek story

After a kiss—brought about by a sprig of mistletoe, one of the boys’ crush on the other, and the panic that their paths might now diverge—Sam and Max meet again after 16 years.
The author’s writing style is wonderful, and I found it easy to get into the story.
I found the story entertaining. Max and Sam are likable characters who are sometimes very funny in their interactions. Sam’s attempts to avoid Max at the office were particularly amusing. But once they’re together in the elevator, they start talking to each other. I liked how their relationship developed. But at times I could have shaken both of them, because guys, how hard is it to communicate? Phew, but otherwise the story was fun.
The narrator was also new to me, but I think he did a great job. He has a pleasant voice, and I could easily distinguish between Sam and Max in his narration. He also read with a lot of variety.
Cute second chance listen

Self discovery
This is book 1 in this series and it can be read as a standalone. This was a new to me author. Not sure if I would read them again.
Not gonna lie, this was hard to get through. I found it to be very, very wordy for not a lot happening. I was bored and had to take breaks multiple times and just wanted it to end.
The 2 MCs were likeable enough characters on their own but they had no chemistry. The prologue had the characters acting young (which I hate), as they were in college, and so I was glad it was fast forwarding 16 years, showing them as 30 something adults and acting mature, but then the Sam character hiding from Max to avoid seeing them when they're are colleagues, came off really juvenile. Plus, don't even get me started on the Dylan situation. Not going to mention it in order to avoid spoilers but their inclusion was not needed at all and got in the way of the chemistry and relationship development between the 2 MCs.
The ending was sweet but there was a little bit of relationship angst due to non communication and that always drives me crazy. Other than that it was low angst. I enjoyed the world the author created and the side characters are definitely what held this story together. I found a few of them very interesting. Moreso than the main characters actually.
One thing I did love is that in the prologue Max leaves his college dreams to run his family business and that trope is so overdone and I personally hate characters like that but I really liked that in the present tense he left all that behind and chased his dreams. So I love the author for doing that.
The narrator had a pleasant reading voice. He did sound a little older than the MCs. He kept a good reading pace/flow and he did a good job at expressing all the emotions. He gave distinct voices to the side characters and brought the story to life. He also gave the 2 MCs their own distinct voice that made it easy to follow the story. He did a great job and helped me get through the story. It was a new to me narrator and I would listen to him again if the story is good but Im not going to give him 5 stars cause I have lots of favorite authors I enjoy more.
2.5 stars (narration 4 stars)

Story - I particularly liked Sam being someone who didn't fit into a stereotype of an anxious and controlling finance nerd, but an excellent surfing teacher at the same time. It was a very long time for a second chance, and their insecurities about that were very much the main focus.
good
