About this listen

April 1803, and the Peace of Amiens is failing as Horatio Hornblower takes a three-master on a vital reconnaissance mission… On the day of his marriage to Maria, Hornblower is ordered to take the Hotspur and head for Brest – war is coming and Napoleon will not catch His Majesty’s navy with its britches round its ankles. With thoughts of his new life as a husband intruding on his duties, Hornblower must prove himself to be not only the most capable commander in the fleet, but also its most daring if he is to stop the French gaining the upper hand. This is the third of eleven books chronicling the adventures of C. S. Forester’s inimitable nautical hero, Horatio Hornblower.

Apart from the somewhat bewildering "why is he marrying this woman" first chapter, this is truly flawless storytelling. The sense of being there is strong and all the characters and their actions ring true. A great listen.

Christian Rodska - better than flawless. His narration is nothing short of fantastic.

Favourite so far, reading in chronological order as opposed to order written. An excellent series . Definitely on par with Aubrey and Maturin

Just a brilliant book(s) that my lucky dog finds it forces me to walk miles with a clear head concentrating on the story detail.
Even though the books are written wildly out of order, it’s not putting me off, just making admire the author even more.

Such brilliance of both writing and reading
