A chaotically magical sequel to Howl’s Moving Castle.

‘One of the greatest ever writers for children’ – Garth Nix

‘A true original’ – Katherine Rundell

‘She is the best writer of magical fantasy for children’ Evening Standard

Charmain Baker is in over her head. Looking after Great Uncle William's tiny cottage while he's ill should have been easy, but Great Uncle William is better known as the Royal Wizard Norland and his house bends space and time. Its single door leads to any number of places – the bedrooms, the kitchen, the caves under the mountains, the past, to name but a few.

By opening that door, Charmain is now also looking after an extremely magical stray dog, a muddled young apprentice wizard and a box of the king's most treasured documents, as well as irritating a clan of small blue creatures.

Caught up in an intense royal search, she encounters an intimidating sorceress named Sophie. And where Sophie is, can the Wizard Howl and fire demon Calcifer be far behind?

Critic reviews

“Diana Wynne Jones ought to be crowned with coloured garlands because she is the best writer of magical fantasy for children in this country” Evening Standard

“Diana Wynne Jones could teach Stephen King and JK Rowling a thing or two … [she] has a skill for inserting just the right amount of detail in her written words, leaving you satiated but not stuffed.” SFX

“Diana Wynne Jones is, quite simply, the best writer of magic there is, for readers of any age.” Neil Gaiman

“…Her hallmarks include laugh-aloud humour, plenty of magic and imaginative array of alternate worlds. Yet, at the same time, a great seriousness is present in all of her novels, a sense of urgency that links Jones’s most outrageous plots to her readers’ hopes and fears…”
Publishers Weekly

“Truly magical – guaranteed to leave you gasping – even hotter than Potter”

Found it quite distracting for a long while trying to get my head around what the accents were even supposed to be. Stilted reading too. But a lovely story

Lovely story, weird accents

it was a very entertaining book. The narrators voices for all of the characters were brilliant. the story self was fun and exciting. I however prefer Howls moving castle, but it was still a very very good story. The guest appearance from Howl and Sophie was obviously a bonus.

very entertaining

I really enjoyed this narrator think her voices were great.
The story was enchanting and the characters fun to adventure with. There were some parts that felt drawn out (e.g. the laundry scene for me personally ) when I wanted more to do with the mystery overall 8/10 for me 🧡

A Lovely Listen
