Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This is a book for anyone who feels overwhelmed by life and is looking for an accessible and gentle way to care for their home—and themselves.

Have you ever looked at a pile of dishes in the sink and wanted to crawl back into bed? Or found yourself staring at the overflowing recycling bin thinking, why is my life such a mess?

But what if we stopped seeing a clean house as a reflection of our worth and instead as a kindness to our future self?

How to Keep House While Drowning will introduce you to six life-changing principles to revolutionise the way you approach domestic work, all without a single to-do list. Most importantly, it will help you get free of shame and guide you in coping with stress...and that ever-mounting laundry pile.

This book will help you:

  • Find ways to make your home serve you.
  • Break down domestic work into manageable tasks.
  • Stop negative self-talk around housework.
  • Give yourself permission to rest, even when things aren't finished.

A useful book, well written and read. I'm someone who was diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive type) as an adult, and was raised in a typical Catholic home, so the content relating to guilt and laziness really hit home. Lots of useful tips in here, I particularly liked the 'five things' tidying method. The book is very much written with things like parenting and working from home in mind, which might be useful to know.
At times I felt that the focus on forgiving yourself for inaction or 'unhealthy' choices outweighed the practical advice for getting tasks done, something that at times felt a little patronising, but that's likely a personal preference. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with self care, whether due to time pressures, mental health, or being neuro-atypical. It's also a book I think the partners and families of people with those struggles should absolutely check out.

A great book

If you struggle with ANY area of your life, not just cleaning, please listen to this. I sat and cried listening to this. I work full time, I have two boys, a husband, a chaotic house, and I'm so overweight and unfit. I'm chronically struggling to hold it all together, BUT this has honestly completely changed my attitude. My house isn't suddenly immaculate, nor do I expect it to become so, but I now feel like I can actually manage it. Same for my weight; it's not going to change overnight but I feel like I can deal with it now. If I met the author I would honestly give her a massive hug!!!

Genuine game changer

This book has honestly changed my life. I have health issues, mobility issues, chronic pain and chronic fatigue, work and oh and am a single Mum to 2 children and have always felt guilty about the ‘state’ of my house.
This book has helped me to let go of the guilt, to start to make my house work for me rather than the other way round. It’s challenged my assumptions and really helped me to shake off the ‘shoulds’.
It’s so easy to listen to and digest - just brilliant 🙂

Everyone should read this book!!!

Modern life is rubbish, burnout is real and my house is a mess. Simply, I needed this book

Brilliant, simple and helpful

As someone recently diagnosed with inattentive ADHD, whilst also parenting a mini chaos monkey, my ongoing struggles to maintain any sort of routine for housework had hit crisis point amongst a pre lockdown mental health burnout, and despite trying many other books and methods nothing has really stuck and I’ve ended up feeling ever more of a failure and lost cause. Well, only time will tell if this is going to be long-term successful, but for now, I’m the most hopeful I’ve ever been and I’m more carefree about not getting it ‘perfect’ too.

The author sets out some really clear, compassionate concepts that are a breath of fresh air for me, and have helped me to understand that being lax with chores doesn’t make me a bad person, just human. The concepts, guidance and tips are delivered in a warm, calm voice that is as reassuring as having your mum/best friend holding your hand.

Highly recommend to anyone who is either battling the challenge of being a domestic god/goddess themselves, or wanting to support someone else to navigate through difficult times. I’m definitely going to be sharing copies as care packages rather than flowers or lasagne!

No more lasagne dishes for friends in crisis, this book hits the spot!
